Why Am I So Afraid of Shoes?
I was browsing at a department store the other week and came upon the shoe section with their wide array of summer designs. I stopped dead in my tracks and just gazed at all the beautiful colors and styles. I could imagine myself as a fashion model strutting around in these beautiful creations. Cork-wedge heels with straps in bright orange for my first trip down the runway, and maybe a spike-heeled, hot pink, open- toed version the next. Then I came back to reality.
All the shoes I own at the moment are black or brown. None of them have very high heels, and if they do have a heel, it's certainly not spiked! Why is that? I got to thinking about it and some of the reasons are leftover from childhood, but they still have a hold over me.
Like the fact that I have big feet. Even as a child, people said that my feet were "gunboats." I didn't know what a gunboat was, but I knew it wasn't good! My feet finally stopped growing when they reached a size 11. In the 1970s, it was hard to find stylish women's shoes in that size. So why would I buy a bright-colored shoe that was probably out of style and draw attention to my large feet?
Then there was the clumsiness issue. With big feet, you usually wind up tripping over them and falling flat on your face. Being a shy, sensitive child, this must not happen. Stiletto heels were certainly out!
Lastly, there was a question of making a fashion statement or the fact that I didn't have the confidence to pull off wearing a stylish, fashionable shoe (refer back to issues #1 and #2). The only statement I wanted to make was that I was invisible – and I think I probably succeeded at it.
But now I'm grown up and the rest of my body is in proportion to the size of my feet. I've learned how to walk decorously (for the most part), and shoe companies now cater to even size 11 feet with the latest colors and styles. Maybe one pair of totally frivolous, bold-colored, high-heeled shoes would be okay. Anyone want to go shoe shopping?
