Debbie Cleek
President, Scrap Girls Inc.
Every four years, right before the Olympics begin, I start to get mildly excited. Usually I am reminded that this is "the" year by some funny TV ad making a lot of hay about the "official pizza" of the Olympic Games. While we might see some occasional off-year coverage of soccer or swimming, most of us don't keep track of who qualified for any of the strange Olympic sports like canoeing. In the interval between games, it's easy to forget that athletes have trained their entire lives to compete, and host cities have spent millions to be sure that they are an excellent host.
But then after all the flags and dance routines of opening ceremonies are over, and the games finally begin, you remember why they are so cool. It is because the athletes are amazing.
Do you remember watching Michael Phelps swim to eight gold medals in 2008, finishing sometimes half a pool length in front of the next closest competitor? Or the Australian women's swimmers who won every race they competed in? Or what about Usain Bolt, the Jamaican runner who broke the world record for the 100 meter? He ran it in 9.69 seconds! That's the time it might have taken you to read these paragraphs.
It's not just the winners, but the athletes who don't win that capture my heart. Every gymnast has me on the edge of my seat. The camera zooms in before the start, and you can see the enormous pressure they carry. Then they step up on to the balance beam to do the routine they have practiced thousands of times. They are so, so perfect, and you watch in awe until there's that occasional step just a tiny bit too far to the left... and it's all over. You just want to reach through your TV and hug them and say, "It's okay; it's okay."
Over the course of two weeks of the Olympic Games, I find that somehow I've gotten all caught up in it again. I catch myself checking the TV listings, staying up late to watch, and searching YouTube to see that dramatic finish one more time. I think we relate to the Olympics because we connect to other people, and as amazing as the athletes are, they are human, too. We know what it's like to try really, really hard at something. We know what it feels like to have the occasional success. We also know how devastating it can feel when we don't. Though our countries may compete against each other, we get an opportunity to come together as a world for two short weeks and unify in celebrating the achievements and the limits of the human spirit.
In the same vein, I hope you get into the spirit of our first-ever Scrap Girls Summer Games. For the next five days, we will have all sorts of fun games on our Scrap Girls Forum that will let you show off your scrapping skills. We will also be featuring a whole new collection of sports-themed kits in our Boutique, inspired by the sports of the Summer Olympics. In the Boutique, you will also see some fun new London-themed kits, as a tip of the bowler hat to this year's host city. And we will be offering a wonderful summer-themed gift set with every purchase.
I hope you enjoy the Scrap Girls Summer Games - and the Olympics, too. May you find yourself as hooked on both of them as I am!
- Debbie

July's Forum Game: Spotlight on the Boutique
Each day of July (with the exception of Sundays), a member of the Welcoming Committee will post an image spotlighting a small circle of the layout you are to search for in the Scrap Girls Boutique. If the layout is not identified by the following morning, a second spotlight circle will be added to the layout; this will be repeated until the product is identified.
All you have to do to participate is search the boutique for the layout and post a link to the product page in the official game thread. Only one guess per member per day is allowed. You can find more specific details in the forum game thread.
Three $10 gift certificates to the Scrap Girls Boutique will be awarded. The winners will be randomly chosen from all the members that correctly identify a product throughout the month.
For complete details, visit the Monthly Forum Games folder on the Scrap Girls Forum.
