Pressing on to Find Creativity
I was trying to be a prepared mom, you know, having activities for my kids to do in the in-between times. I have five boys. We were travelling a lot and moving to a new city, so we would be three days here, four days there, and then do it all over again.
We were living out of suitcases and eating out more than I care to admit, but we were doing it and having fun with it as well. We were out of our normal routine, so I would carry cards, an iPhone, crayons, and pens in my bag. We carried another bag with our homeschool books to do a little work here and an assignment there.
Then one day, I left my bag in the wrong place. I was here and it was there. My boys were here with me, and my activities were at home there. We had hours to fill and nothing to fill it with. What was I supposed to do?
I decided that we would spend the afternoon at a park. The kids always beg me over and over to go spend time at parks to play and run, so today would be the day. We drove to a nearby park with huge green trees and a nice open area and a small play section. I was sure this would work! Twenty minutes later, one by one, they came and sat on the grass.
"When are we going home?" they asked. "Can we go yet?" "Is there something else we can do?" I was shocked. I was befuddled. I was frustrated. They finally had hours just to play and do whatever they wanted. and they used up all their ideas in 20 minutes! What's wrong with this picture? I imagined my boys happily playing imaginary games in and out of the trees, and climbing and playing and laughing with each other. Then I realized that we get so used to short bursts of attention to one thing that we never really press on to creativity. We are entertained and occupied in our minds so that the creativity of imagining and inventing and creating never has a chance to take hold.
I decided right there that my boys needed a little lesson in creativity. We had no toys, no games, no electronics, no art supplies or anything, just a park and a lot of time to fill. I picked up a few little sticks from under a tree and started shoving them into the soft cool earth under the tree. Maybe this could be a fort....? I grabbed a few more sticks and stuck them in the dirt in a circle. I needed a flag, so I found a longer stick and a nice big green leaf and threaded the leaf onto the top of the stick. I jammed it proudly into the ground in front of my fort.
By this time the boys are asking me what I'm making, "What is it, Mom?" they asked. I explained that this is my fort, and right away they asked if they could make forts. Sure, make them out of whatever you want. All at once they went rushing off to all parts of the park gathering falling bark, sticks, leaves, pinecones, small rocks, and even feathers. They were building forts! The little boys decided they could work together to make one big fort. My oldest son soon went into business for himself, taking the time to gather the prized flat pieces of bark that were harder to find and gathering up the flattest of the leaves and the prettiest pinecones. He then sold them to his brothers for a multitude of sticks for building his own fort.
An hour and a half later, I had to drag them away. Their elaborate forts had roofs of leaves and walls of sticks and bark. There were walkways and paths and lookout towers. I was very pleased. I could not have asked for a more productive afternoon.
How often do you get the opportunity to press through to the heart of creativity? It is so often crowded out by the everyday distractions that lead us away. Instead of taking time to draw, to paint, to tell a story or make something beautiful, we check emails again or do anything else but stare at the blankness and create something that never was before.

Favorite Product I've Designed:

ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Bubble Wrap
I love these bubble wrap papers because it has the look of painting with bubble wrap and it gives any layout such an artistic look. The separate papers line up perfectly to create layers of different colors. What could be more fun than that?
