Creating Canvas Blocks
Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS4 with Windows Vista
In preparing for this assignment, I made a trip to our local craft store to get some ideas for our May Scrap Girls Club. For me, a trip to the craft store, just like the office supply store, is my trip to the candy store! I love all the bright colors, the packaging, the rows of pens and brushes and paper! Lately, I have been really interested in art canvas and the non-framed appearance for pictures and artwork, including layouts. As I was browsing the canvas aisle, I found a neat set of inexpensive 4x4-inch canvas blocks. I suddenly had an idea for my Scrap Girls Club Craft!
The set of art canvas that I purchased contained nine 4x4-inch squares, all stretched and ready to work. The idea to make a monogram for each member of my family came to mind. That would be four squares. My original idea entailed only the four monograms, then it occurred to me that if I took papers from the collection and alternated them between our monograms, it would make a for a lively, fun, brightly colored display. That would be eight of the squares. Then, voila, it occurred to me to seek out a fun word art for the ninth square to express a sentiment about my family. As the concept for this craft evolved, so did my excitement!
To start this project, I created the monograms. I did this by creating four 12x12-inch layouts in the usual manner using the May Scrap Girls Club ingredients. After they were all finished, I saved them as full resolution JPGs. Then I brought each monogram in JPG form onto a new 8x8-inch document and sized each one down to 4x4 inches.
Next, I selected which papers from the club that I wanted to use to complement the monograms. Each of the four papers that I selected were brought into a new 8x8-inch document and sized to 4x4 inches, just like the monograms.
Lastly, I made a very basic 4x4-inch square with a very simple black background and one of the brightly colored word arts from the May Club. This was also printed as 4x4 inches.
Now comes the crafty part! Each of the above documents was printed to the highest quality of my printer. After letting each page dry for a while, each square was cut out so it would be alone.
The craft supplies used for the next step are all staple craft supplies that I always have on hand. Mod Podge®, brightly colored craft paint, and a thick paint brush were all I needed to turn these plain canvas squares into a fun family activity. Next, I requested the help of my daughters to paint all nine blocks in bright colors to match the club. I had already printed the squares, so we were able to match the colors for the paint. After the paint dried, we played around with which monogram and which paper would best fit the random colors we had chosen for the backgrounds. This was fun - it was like tic-tac-toe with color!
After the decisions were made as to which piece went on which colored background, we simply glued all the pieces onto the front of the canvas. Heavily applied Mod Podge® was used to glue down the pieces, and then more Mod Podge® was applied on top of the squares as well as the sides. After the first coat of glue dried, a second coat was put on even heavier than the first, with plenty of thickness and texture. Again, this was done pretty randomly, and my daughters thoroughly enjoyed the process. I just sat back and watched.
Lastly, we let the squares get good and dry. They dried overnight and through the next day before we tried to do anything with them. They can now be clustered and used as a wall display; they can be stacked or spread out and used on a bookshelf or mantle. They can be rearranged and restacked as many times as you, your kids, or your guests desire! The canvas blocks can be broken up and displayed throughout the house, for instance, if your kids each want "theirs" in their room!
This craft project using the May Scrap Girls Club was super easy and fun. I was able to really use my digital skills to enhance my craft project. This was something the whole family could participate in, plus it was inexpensive and fun!

May's Forum Game: Boutique Alphabet Game!
The Boutique Alphabet Game is back! Do you remember playing the game "I am going on a _____ hunt and bringing..." where each player listed items starting with a specific letter? We are playing a similar game on the Scrap Girls Forum during the month of May. Each day except Sundays, a team member will post a new theme and starting letter in the game thread. Members then will search the Scrap Girls Boutique for a product that fits the theme and post it in the game thread. Entries are to follow the alphabet starting with the letter posted with the theme each day. Only one product per letter per round will be counted and products may not be used more than once. Collections and their individual parts count as one product. Time stamps will be used to determine credit in the case of duplicate letter or product posts. There is a limit of three game posts per person each day and another player must post before posting again. Member names will be added to a drawing based on the number of qualified product links posted in the thread.
Prizes will be awarded at the end of the month and winners will be announced in the June 9th Newsletter. Gift certificates will be awarded as follows: $15 SG Gift Certificate for first place, $10 SG Gift Certificate for second place and a $5 SG Gift Certificate for third place.
For complete details, visit the Monthly Forum Games folder on the Scrap Girls Forum.

May Monthly Layout Contest: May is a big month in the northern hemisphere for flowers. For this month's layout contest, we're going to give a little twist on the usual flower photos. We want you to try your hand at extreme close-ups. Be creative in point of view and angle. Even most point-and-shoot cameras have a close-up mode. Do the best you can with the equipment you have and scrap a layout with a photo or two – or three. Your submission will be judged on its merit as a layout, not necessarily the photography. Post your layouts in the May Monthly Layout Gallery before Midnight MDT on May 31st. Be sure to list your layout's product credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. Two layouts will be selected to win a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used. If your layout is chosen, it will be showcased as a Club Concepts layout winner, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
