How to Make an ATC Using ScrapSimple Craft Templates: Artist Trading Cards
Tutorial created using Photoshop CS4 with Windows 7
An Artist Trading Card, or ATC, is a miniature work of art. Originally collected and traded among artists, the ATC concept has spread into paper crafts and has been incorporated into scrapbooking.
Because it is an art form, ATCs can be created using any type of media the artist chooses. Paint, markers, collage, cloth, and even metal can be used. And these days, people are using their computers to create them digitally. It's about expression, not rules.
There are a few rules, but they are simple. ATCs are to be traded and collected, never sold. They must measure 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches (63 mm x 89 mm), which is the size of a standard sports trading card or a playing card. And generally, the back should include your name, your contact information, the date it was created, and the title of the card.
There are opportunities to participate in ATC swaps in the Scrap Girls community. You'll find them on the Scrap Girls Forum and/or on the Chat Calendar. In those swaps, a theme is determined, participants create a card based on their interpretation of the theme, and the cards are exchanged. You'll find swaps for both digital and hybrid cards.
Digital cards are created entirely in digital form and traded electronically. A low-resolution version can be posted in a special ATC gallery, but more importantly, each participant emails the high-resolution version to the host, who in turn sends each participant a group of all the cards created.
Hybrid cards are created with a mix of digital and traditional supplies and/or techniques, and are traded by mail. In these swaps, a sign-up period is determined. After the deadline, the number of participants is posted, and each participant will create that many cards. The cards are placed in a plastic sleeve and mailed to the host. The host will divide the cards between all the participants and mail the sets.
Hybrid cards or printed digital cards are also traded in person at "meet-ups." In these cases, there isn't a theme. The cards are representative of the artist's work, may tell a little bit about their interests, and contain contact information.
Creating digital or hybrid ATC using ScrapSimple Craft Templates: Artist Trading Cards is really easy! (You can refer to Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Instructions Handbook [Free ScrapSimple basics eBook] for directions on how to use layered templates.) In this case, I've chosen a template from the set and either clipped a paper to the template layout or applied a style.
ScrapSimple Craft Templates: Artist Trading Cards also includes "signature" templates (one each of portrait and landscape orientation) for the back of your cards. I've used the landscape version for the back of my card.
ATC Project Ideas
Use a layer from one template on another template:
Create a digital card from a template and put your name and date on the front. Save as a JPG and trade it with others electronically.
Print out the cards on photo paper and cut them out. Adhere to a piece of cardstock. Create a signature and adhere it to the back of each card.
Create a hybrid card. Embellish the digitally created card with glitter, stitching, buttons, ribbon, charms, or any embellishment you wish.
After you've designed your card digitally, print out each layer separately. Cut them out and assemble them on your card corresponding with your original design. Add additional embellishments (such as glitter, stickers, ribbon) if you wish.
Most of all, have fun expressing your creativity and sharing it with others!

May's Forum Game: Boutique Alphabet Game!
The Boutique Alphabet Game is back! Do you remember playing the game "I am going on a _____ hunt and bringing..." where each player listed items starting with a specific letter? We are playing a similar game on the Scrap Girls Forum during the month of May. Each day except Sundays, a team member will post a new theme and starting letter in the game thread. Members then will search the Scrap Girls Boutique for a product that fits the theme and post it in the game thread. Entries are to follow the alphabet starting with the letter posted with the theme each day. Only one product per letter per round will be counted and products may not be used more than once. Collections and their individual parts count as one product. Time stamps will be used to determine credit in the case of duplicate letter or product posts. There is a limit of three game posts per person each day and another player must post before posting again. Member names will be added to a drawing based on the number of qualified product links posted in the thread.
Prizes will be awarded at the end of the month and winners will be announced in the June 9th Newsletter. Gift certificates will be awarded as follows: $15 SG Gift Certificate for first place, $10 SG Gift Certificate for second place and a $5 SG Gift Certificate for third place.
For complete details, visit the Monthly Forum Games folder on the Scrap Girls Forum.
May Monthly Layout Contest: May is a big month in the northern hemisphere for flowers. For this month's layout contest, we're going to give a little twist on the usual flower photos. We want you to try your hand at extreme close-ups. Be creative in point of view and angle. Even most point-and-shoot cameras have a close-up mode. Do the best you can with the equipment you have and scrap a layout with a photo or two – or three. Your submission will be judged on its merit as a layout, not necessarily the photography. Post your layouts in the May Monthly Layout Gallery before Midnight MDT on May 31st. Be sure to list your layout's product credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. Two layouts will be selected to win a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used. If your layout is chosen, it will be showcased as a Club Concepts layout winner, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Check our Forum calendar if you have any questions about what is happening at Scrap Girls. All event times are given in Mountain Time Zone unless otherwise noted. Need help converting time zones?
