Pieces of Me
As an immigrant for many years, and a few times around, too, I have gone through the process of saying goodbye to loved ones, not knowing when I would see them again, meeting new people, and working out who my friends would be in the short term as well as the long term. And all the while, I left behind pieces of me in my country of birth, South Africa.
The first time I emigrated from South Africa to Sydney, Australia, I was 18 years old. Not a great time to move a teenager as I had just completed school, was ready to start my tertiary studies, and had a wonderful group of friends. Suffice it to say, due to many factors, after almost four years of living in Sydney, I went back to South Africa to live, leaving pieces of me in Sydney.
I lived in South Africa for a further three years, reconnecting with my friends, making a life for myself again, and finding a good job. It was at this job that I met my future husband who was an immigrant to South Africa from the UK. Once we were engaged, we realized that we did not want to live and bring up a family in South Africa. It was not the place for us. I refused to live in England, and thankfully, my husband wasn't keen on the idea himself. Due to my living in Australia, I was able to sponsor him. Five months after we got married, we arrived in Australia to live, me for the second time. This time, though, we chose to live in Melbourne. Once again, I had to say goodbye to family and friends in South Africa and start afresh in Australia. Yet again, I left behind pieces of me in South Africa.
It is now 18 years since we arrived here in Melbourne. We have made a home and a family here, have made some of the most wonderful and supportive friends, and even have some of our extended family living near us. We call Melbourne home now as that is what it is, and South Africa has faded into the mist of our memories at a very rapid rate. We still have family in the UK and are in constant contact with them, so there are pieces of me there as well.
When I look inside to see if I am happy with myself and all that I am, I see that all the pieces of me – those left in South Africa twice, those that reside in the UK, and those that are here with me - make me who I am today. I work hard on myself to make all those pieces meld into one (hopefully) strong, capable, understanding, creative, and loving person who no longer thinks of herself as an immigrant but as a whole and complete true-blue Aussie.
Take the time to put all the pieces of you together and see just what picture that jigsaw creates. You may be surprised at just who you are - because of all those pieces of you.
- Jo

ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Be Puzzled
I love jigsaw puzzles; I get completely focused on the project and will stick to it right until the final piece has been put in its place. Much like a person made up of different pieces, aspects, areas, angles, and shapes, these ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Be Puzzled will give you many pieces, aspect, areas, angles, and shapes to create the picture of your choice. Enjoy!

April's Forum Game: BINGO!
Join us for an exciting game of Springtime BINGO on the Message Board Forum in April! Pick 25 words from the list provided in the forum game thread and send them in an email to [email protected] with a subject line that says "BINGO CARD - your Scrap Girls Message Board username" by Tuesday, April 3rd at Midnight MDT in order to play in the first round. The first round will begin on Wednesday, April 4th. If you miss the first round deadline, you can still play! Just send in your BINGO card at any time during the month, and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts.
Each day, a member of the Welcoming Committee will call five random words from the BINGO list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call "BINGO!" in the game thread to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards will be cleared and a new round will begin the following day.
Each winner will receive a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!
For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Forum.
