Shape Repetition
Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS5 on a Mac
One of the greatest challenges when creating an engaging layout is to connect the emotions of the original image to your visual presentation. The viewer's eye must be guided around the composition that expresses the memories and feelings of those precious pictures. Shape repetition - duplicating elements, textures, themes, or colors in a digital scrap layout - is an easy way to give your layout a compelling flow.
A shape constitutes anything from the simplest form, such as a circle, to more complex ideas found in curving lines. Shapes can also enhance the theme of your layout. By using a series of similar shapes, the subject is more clearly portrayed. Shapes can be repeated throughout clusters, along borders and as backdrops. You will find an excellent source of inspiration in the Scrap Girls Boutique by typing Shapes in the Search box or browsing through the Brush Sets section. An excellent selection of custom shapes may also be found in your Photoshop toolbox.
The layout below demonstrates rhythm and motion by repeating curving shapes across the page. The beach theme is enhanced by the suggestion of the movement of waves. Melissa Renfro's ScrapSimple Tools - Shapes: Calligraphy Swirls 5001 Biggie were woven with the custom shape "waves" found in the Photoshop toolbox. Here is how you can make the curving shapes:
On a new document, with the foreground color black, draw out the custom shape from the toolbox called "waves."
Rasterize the shape (Layer> Rasterize> Shape) and then erase two of the three lines.
Using the Transform Tool, with the arrows placed on the end center square, push to create deeper curves.
Duplicate the layer and join the two layers by overlapping at the center and merge.
Again, with the Transform Tool, pull upward on the top center square to make even deeper curves. (The original layer has been duplicated several times for this example.)
By adding a stroke to the shape (Edit> Stroke), the size may be increased dramatically. Push and pull until you are happy with your shape. Now you have templates to transfer to your layout.

When you envision a roly poly bug (sometimes called a pill bug or potato bug), what comes to mind? Little round balls, lots and lots of little round balls! To demonstrate how to develop a theme using shapes, here is a second layout around those strange Armadillidiidaes.
Note the repetition of round shapes from Brush Set: Circles Couture Biggie (by Thao Cosgrove) placed in the background, an alpha from On A Whim Collection Mini (by Syndee Nuckles) and circle frames from two products ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Sliced and Lifted Photo Frames and ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Doodle Link Frames (both by Kim Meeder).

East Coast High Noon Crop

Join April (April Showers) each Wednesday at 10am MT for the East Coast High Noon Crop. All coasts and time zones are welcome! These crops are designed to allow you to work on your own photos and themes, simply giving participants a one hour goal and a fun, new challenge each week.
On May 2nd, we'll do a Stripes Challenge. Create a layout on any theme, any topic and any colors using stripes! The stripes can be from paper, paper strips or in your photo. It is up to you.
Create your layout and upload it to the special High Noon Crop Gallery. You'll be amazed what you can get done in just one hour, but there is no High Noon Sheriff timing you! Hope to see you in the chat room!
April's Forum Game: BINGO!
Join us for an exciting game of Springtime BINGO on the Message Board Forum in April! Pick 25 words from the list provided in the forum game thread and send them in an email to [email protected] with a subject line that says "BINGO CARD - your Scrap Girls Message Board username" by Tuesday, April 3rd at Midnight MDT in order to play in the first round. The first round will begin on Wednesday, April 4th. If you miss the first round deadline, you can still play! Just send in your BINGO card at any time during the month, and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts.
Each day, a member of the Welcoming Committee will call five random words from the BINGO list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call "BINGO!" in the game thread to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards will be cleared and a new round will begin the following day.
Each winner will receive a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!

Or, you can scrap about another surprise that has happened in your life. You don't have to have photos. It could be a journaling page. Post your layouts in the April Monthly Layout Gallery before Midnight MDT on April 30th. Be sure to list your layout's product credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties.
