Using Portions of Photo Masks
Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop Elements on a PC running Windows 7
If you don't have any photo masks in your digital scrapbooking collection, take a look at the many ways this versatile tool can be used! They might be labeled photo masks but they can also do double duty as a paper mask for both your 12x12-inch and 8.5x11-inch layouts. Let's take a look and see how this works.
First, if you are using it on a 12x12-inch layout, you will have a little bit of resizing and editing to do. In this layout, I wanted something to add interest to the edges of my paper and give some weight to the bottom of the page.
I decided to use my ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Forest Frames to accomplish this and give the feeling of apple trees.
First, pull the photo mask onto your layout. You will see that it's too small for the page, but don't worry, you can resize the mask by clicking on the box at the corner of the mask and pulling the corner out larger while holding down the Shift key. (Holding down the Shift key while enlarging your mask will keep the mask in proportion.) Drag and reposition your mask until you get a size that you like.
Bring over a digital paper to clip to the mask by putting the new paper layer above the mask layer in your Layers Palette, and then hit Ctrl+G.
Now it's time to do the editing I mentioned earlier. As you can see, there are some sections of the mask that don't reach the top of my 12x12-inch layout. This area is easily erased by using the Lasso Tool to surround those areas. With the mask layer highlighted in the Layers Palette, delete that portion of the mask.
You can repeat the above steps to apply the mask in other areas of your layout to your liking. Don't forget that these same steps will also work with all of your 8.5x11-inch layouts as well.
So pull out those photo masks and discover the many ways they can work for you!

East Coast High Noon Crop
Wednesday, April 25th - 10:00AM MDT
Join April (April Showers) each Wednesday at 10am MT for the East Coast High Noon Crop. All coasts and time zones are welcome! These crops are designed to allow you to work on your own photos and themes, simply giving participants a one hour goal and a fun, new challenge each week.
On April 25th, we'll have an Alpha Challenge. Create a layout using at least one Alpha. It can be a ScrapSimple Alpha or one from a collection; it is your choice!
Create your layout and upload it to the special High Noon Crop Gallery. You'll be amazed what you can get done in just one hour, but there is no High Noon Sheriff timing you! Hope to see you in the chat room!
Speed Scrap Crop
Wednesday, April 25th - 6:00PM MDT
It's time for some Speed! Join Shannon (tinkerbell11) at 6pm MT for the Speed Scrap Crop! She'll give you six tasks, spread out over an hour. You'll then have an hour to get it finished and posted in the Gallery!
April's Forum Game: BINGO!
Join us for an exciting game of Springtime BINGO on the Message Board Forum in April! Pick 25 words from the list provided in the forum game thread and send them in an email to [email protected] with a subject line that says "BINGO CARD - your Scrap Girls Message Board username" by Tuesday, April 3rd at Midnight MDT in order to play in the first round. The first round will begin on Wednesday, April 4th. If you miss the first round deadline, you can still play! Just send in your BINGO card at any time during the month, and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts.
Each day, a member of the Welcoming Committee will call five random words from the BINGO list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call "BINGO!" in the game thread to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards will be cleared and a new round will begin the following day.
Each winner will receive a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!
