Question from Ro: Do You Have a Hard Time Letting Go?

Is it hard for you to let go of old things? Or is it just me?
My husband wanted a new mattress because he was tired of falling out of the bed. He wanted a new mattress for a very long time - years, actually.
But I kept telling him that the mattress was fine. I wasn't having trouble with it (I slept in the middle to avoid the pot holes), and I didn't want to buy a new mattress, particularly when I could think up far more interesting ways to spend that money - like going on a cruise.
I had worn out the mattress completely by setting up office in my bed during long periods of recovery from a long string of illnesses and surgeries. As I worked, I sat in "my side" of the bed with my laptop balanced on top of a wooden tray my uncle made my grandmother in junior high shop class. Over time, the stress of my bottom sitting in one spot, day after day, took its toll, and before we realized it was happening, my little bottom wore a permanent dip along the edge of the mattress.
So we flipped the mattress... and then rotated it... and flipped and rotated it around and around and when it was all over, we had a mattress that had permanent dips all the way around it, top and bottom.
And that's the point when the whining began.
Gary kept falling out of the bed because the mattress edges were completely worn out. He asked me nicely to buy a new mattress. He took me to look at new mattresses. He told me stories of people who bought new mattresses and had all of their dreams come true because they began sleeping so well.
But me? Every time it would come up, I would bluster about, saying, "I'm not going to waste my money buying a new mattress."
After a while, Gary pretty much gave up trying to sleep with me. (Oh, maybe I shouldn't say that out loud. But it's true.) He would start each night in his spot, but it didn't take long before he would fall out on the floor. And then, not wanting to go through that again, he'd surrender and stumble off into the guest room.
You'd think that this would be enough to convince me to crack open the wallet and help the poor guy out, but nooooo... I couldn't do that. I didn't want to waste money by replacing my "perfectly good bed."
And then it happened: I fell out of the bed three times in a row in a single night. The final time I picked myself up off the floor, I knew that I had to drop my false pride and submit myself to the process of finding a comfortable mattress that will last a long time.
A few Fridays ago, we did it. We went to the store. We shopped. We laid on many varieties of mattresses. We agreed on one. We spent some hard-earned money - and we conquered!
The mattress was delivered the following day. The first night sleeping in it was so miserable that I thought we'd made a horrible mistake. But after a couple more nights (and after I put my feather mattress topper back on it), I got used to how it felt, and it got used to how I sleep. My mattress and I are simpatico. And everyone stays in bed.
Perfect.
My advice to you: If you need a new mattress, get one. Sleeping on this new mattress has already dramatically improved my health and increased my energy level. I guess I wasn't getting as much sleep as I thought on my old one.

April's Forum Game: BINGO!
Join us for an exciting game of Springtime BINGO on the Message Board Forum in April! Pick 25 words from the list provided in the forum game thread and send them in an email to games@scrapgirls.com with a subject line that says "BINGO CARD - your Scrap Girls Message Board username" by Tuesday, April 3rd at Midnight MDT in order to play in the first round. The first round will begin on Wednesday, April 4th. If you miss the first round deadline, you can still play! Just send in your BINGO card at any time during the month, and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts.
Each day, a member of the Welcoming Committee will call five random words from the BINGO list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call "BINGO!" in the game thread to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards will be cleared and a new round will begin the following day.
Each winner will receive a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!
For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Forum.
