Creating a Paper Using a Dynamic Brush
Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS5
Today I'm going to show you how easy and fun it is to create your own background paper using a dynamic brush. But first, a little about dynamic brushes:
Dynamic brushes are just like regular brushes wherein you can stamp the brush design onto your layout. However, unlike regular brushes, when you sweep your mouse across your workspace, the brush automatically changes direction and size, giving you a scattering of the brush design. Some dynamic brushes also have a multi-colored effect, further adding visual interest.
So, let's get started! Let me show you what I did, and you can follow along with your own digital scrapbooking supplies and your photo-editing software.
First, I placed a pink paper from the Lemonade Stand Collection.
Next, I loaded Dynamic Brush Set: Fruity Biggie and choose a strawberry brush. I set the brush size to around 750 pixels and selected white as the foreground and background color. On a new layer above my pink paper, I simply swept the brush all over my layout. If you don't like the scatter, simply start over. Just remember to brush on a new layer.
This is what my paper looked like at this point. Next, with the brush layer active, I adjusted the layer's Blending Mode as follows:
I selected "Linear Burn" with Fill Opacity at 48%, and I checked "Stroke."
I set Stroke at 9 pixels and set Color to white.
These adjustments resulted in an outline type of design.
Next, I created a new layer, and still using the dynamic strawberry brush, I set its size to around 500 pixels and chose a reddish-pink foreground and background color. I stamped on the unfilled areas to complement the strawberry outlines and gave the paper design some contrast. I adjusted the layer's Fill to 50%.
That's it! Now, wasn't that easy? You can also experiment with different Blending Modes or apply layer styles to get the look that you want.

Join us for an exciting game of Springtime BINGO on the Message Board Forum in April! Pick 25 words from the list provided in the forum game thread and send them in an email to [email protected] with a subject line that says "BINGO CARD - your Scrap Girls Message Board username" by Tuesday, April 3rd at Midnight MDT in order to play in the first round. The first round will begin on Wednesday, April 4th. If you miss the first round deadline, you can still play! Just send in your BINGO card at any time during the month, and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts.
Each day, a member of the Welcoming Committee will call five random words from the BINGO list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call "BINGO!" in the game thread to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards will be cleared and a new round will begin the following day.
Each winner will receive a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!
