Blending Modes and Photo Masks
Tutorial created Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Windows Vista
For this tutorial, I am going to show you what's underneath my layout. Really! Let's do something wild and different and "undress" my layout. I want to show you the very beginnings of the layout and show you a technique to make your layout shine.
Layout by Amy Flanagan

This layout was designed to be very artistic and flowing with movement. The embellishments compliment the photos, but the is the real star of the show. Let's see what the layout looks like without the embellishments or word art.
The layout without the embellishments is obviously incomplete. This shows you how, in their absence, the embellishments move your eye through the layout. When they are gone, the eye doesn't know what to look at first. Now let's dig deeper a little bit more and remove the paper.
Wow! Now what?! There's hardly anything left to the layout. Ah, but there is! This is actually more than bits and pieces of photos placed on a page. Let's look for some clues about what's special about this part of the layout. Let's remove the photos so that you can see what is underneath it all - the all-important, all-elusive, coy, often-misunderstood, and rarely seen photo mask!
Underneath it all, the photo mask is a tool for the very beginnings of your layout. This doesn't look like much, does it? These are the ugly ducklings that grow into beautiful layouts. A photo mask is a shape in the shades of black and grey to which you can attach photos, papers, color, and/or texture. They can be simple or ornate. You can draw one yourself with your Rectangle or Shape Tool as I did here with the top and the right shapes. You can use one of a myriad of photo mask sets from the Scrap Girl Boutique. You can even use a paper template, as I did here with the center mask. This particular paper template allows the edges to blend into the paper seamlessly so that no edges of your photo will be seen on your layout.
Once the photo masks were placed on my layout, I clipped the photos to them by highlighting both the mask layer and the photo layer. Then I hit Ctrl+Alt+G. The photo then takes on the shape of the mask below it. At this point you can adjust or resize your photo, and only the part over the mask will be seen. By adjusting the Blending Modes of the mask layer, you have total control over the entire look of the photo attached to it. In my layout, the photo masks are set with Blending Mode: "Hard Light" to get a highly saturated, deep "burn" of the photo into the paper.
Have some fun, and play with your photo masks and the Blending Modes. Don't be intimidated by their ugly duckling-ness! Look at your layout before you dress it up, and see what kinds of beautiful effects you can discover and create with photo masks and Blending Modes!

March's Forum Game: Simple Steps to Super Scrapping
This month's Scrap Girls Forum game, Simple Steps to Super Scrapping, is designed to help you get more scrapbook pages done with a series of simple steps that add up to a finished page at the end of each week.
Throughout March, Monday through Saturday, a team member will post a daily layout step in the Simple Steps to Super Scrapping game thread; the first week has 9 steps, and the remaining three weeks have 6 steps each. These steps will be posted in large purple font so they will be easy to spot.
Members who complete the steps required in the game thread and post all 4 layouts in the Simple Steps to Super Scrapping Gallery will be entered in a drawing for one of two $15.00 Scrap Girls Boutique Gift Certificates.
Each completed layout posted in the Simple Steps to Super Scrapping Gallery, up to 4 per member, will be entered in a drawing for one of three $5.00 Scrap Girls Boutique Gift Certificates.
You have until 11:59pm MDT on March 31, 2012 to complete the steps and post your layouts to the Simple Steps to Super Scrapping Gallery.
For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Forum.
