Layering Embellishments
Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS5 with Windows Vista
One of the many fun aspects of digital scrapbooking is adding embellishments to your layouts. It's up to you and your style or feelings at the time as to whether you use just a few embellishments or a large number of them. You may find yourself wanting to layer some embellishments over others. It's easy to do! You can do it with as few or as many embellishments as you would like.
One item that I usually start with is a somewhat flat object such as a picture or a ribbon. In the layout I'm working on today, I'm using a mat. I use such items as an anchor for the embellishments that I will layer. The mat that I am using today from Mini Golf Collection Mini has a phrase on it. I want to have a swirl in that corner of the layout so I'm using one from Brush Set: Swirlicious Biggie that I've added a style to.
I like the swirl, but I want to be able to see it even more. This is where digital scrapbooking is so fun. You can move things around and change the order of the layers, all without messing up anything! I'm going to see how it looks with the swirl above the mat. Don't be afraid of covering up part of another embellishment even if it has words on it.
I really like the look of that! Now notice that the flat object (the mat) has a smaller shadow. I want the swirl to look like it is lifted off of the layout a bit, so I used a deeper shadow to create the "lift." Keep in mind when you are layering embellishments that the flatter ones should have smaller shadows and the thicker or more bulky items, such as buttons and flowers, should have larger shadows. This will give your layout a more realistic look.
I think I'll add one more embellishment to this corner of the layout: a flag to hold my date journaling. Since it is the uppermost embellishment of this small cluster, I'll be giving it a deeper shadow than the mat.
If you want to layer some embellishments, it's up to you whether to just use a few, as I did, or to use many embellishments. Have fun with it!

East Coast High Noon Crop
Wednesday, March 7th - 10:00AM MST
Join April (April Showers) each Wednesday at 10am MT for the East Coast High Noon Crop. All coasts and time zones are welcome! These crops are designed to allow you to work on your own photos and themes, simply giving participants a one hour goal and a fun, new challenge each week. On March 7th, we'll do a Circle Challenge. Create a page using at least one circle. It can be a circular embellishment, polka-dots, brads. It's your choice! Create your layout and upload it to the special High Noon Crop Gallery. You'll be amazed what you can get done in just one hour, but there is no High Noon Sheriff timing you! Hope to see you in the chat room!

March's Message Board Game: Simple Steps to Super Scrapping
This month's Scrap Girls Forum game, Simple Steps to Super Scrapping, is designed to help you get more scrapbook pages done with a series of simple steps that add up to a finished page at the end of each week.
Throughout March, Monday through Saturday, a team member will post a daily layout step in the Simple Steps to Super Scrapping game thread; the first week has 9 steps, and the remaining three weeks have 6 steps each. These steps will be posted in large purple font so they will be easy to spot.
Members who complete the steps required in the game thread and post all 4 layouts in the Simple Steps to Super Scrapping Gallery will be entered in a drawing for one of two $15.00 Scrap Girls Boutique Gift Certificates.
Each completed layout posted in the Simple Steps to Super Scrapping Gallery, up to 4 per member, will be entered in a drawing for one of three $5.00 Scrap Girls Boutique Gift Certificates.
You have until 11:59pm MDT on March 31, 2012 to complete the steps and post your layouts to the Simple Steps to Super Scrapping Gallery.

For March's contest, we would like to see your layouts with the theme of renewal or rebirth - be it personal, professional, family, or from nature.
