Software Review - Adobe Photoshop Elements 10
Tutorial written in Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 on a Mac running OS X Lion
It can be hard to keep up with Adobe and all their new versions of Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. Personally, I don't use PSE very often; mostly, I just test products to make sure they are compatible. But recently I downloaded PSE 10 and was pleasantly surprised at all the fun, new effects there are available. (Version 7 is the most current version I own.) I was so impressed with how easy it is to add really cool effects to my photos. While I don't see myself using PSE for layouts or designing, I can see myself using it a lot to give my photos that WOW factor!
Let's look at some of the fun things you can do with your photos! Once you have opened up Photoshop Elements 10, you will see the Edit menu on the right side of your PSE window. There are three tabs: Full, Quick, and Guided. Click on the Guided tab to be taken to the Guided Menu pane. The great thing about the Guided Menu functions is that you are actually "guided" step-by-step through each edit or effect; it's like a mini tutorial right there in PSE!
You will see that there are a ton of edits and effects that you can use on your photos. I really could have spent hours playing!
The first effect I tried was the Line Drawing, which creates a pencil sketch of your photo. I couldn't believe how easy this was!
I just opened up a photo and selected "Line Drawing" from the Guided Pane, and then clicked the "Pencil Sketch" button. You will notice that it takes you step-by-step through the steps, and there are only three!
After creating the sketch, you have the option to add a little color back into the photo by clicking on "Adjust Layer Opacity." I thought this looked pretty cool, and then finally in Step 3, I increased the contrast in the photo by clicking the "Levels" button.
Next, I added a vintage look to my photo by selecting the "Old Fashioned Photo" effect in the Guided menu pane. After I followed the four steps, I got a really nice, aged photo effect, complete with grain!
Then I added a great Lomo camera effect, again the step-by-step instructions make it so easy!
And who doesn't love some Pop Art? Such a fun effect and a great way to add some bright color to your layout - or even a card!
One of the coolest effects is the ability to add a Reflection to a photo, object, or word! I used the candelabra from my Kitchen Chic Collection Mini – and, wow, that was a fun effect to play around with.
What's NEW in Photoshop 10:
To the best of my knowledge, the above effects are also available in Photoshop Elements 9, but below are a few effects only available in PSE 10.
Depth of Field
This is so cool! You can adjust or add Depth of Field to your photos! Following their step-by-step instructions, you have the option of doing a basic depth of field application or a manual application, which lets you choose exactly what is in focus and what's blurred.
You can also add the popular Orton Effect to your photos!
A few other features in PSE 10:
You can paint effects or patterns right on your photo; effects include Pencil Sketch, Oil Pastel, and 100 more!
Break up your photo into a fun collage of snapshots.
Object Search, which automatically finds your photos based on what's in them.
Crop guides, use Rule or Thirds, or the Golden Ration options to create the best composition for your photos and layouts.
I hope this has given you some more fun ideas to bring your photos up a notch!
Until next time, Happy Scrappin'!

Using a Product's Packaging for Inspiration
Tutorial created using Photoshop Elements 5.0 with Windows Vista
Are you short on inspiration? Have you lost a little bit of that scrapbooking mojo you once had? Are you just plain out of fresh ideas when it comes to designing a page layout? Well, you're not alone.
We all suffer from that blank canvas syndrome once in a while. But here is a little tip that might get your wheels turning and your inspiration following.
"Slow down and look around."
That sounds pretty easy, but you'll be surprised at what you see if you just look! Inspiration is everywhere, from the color of your favorite shoes to the pattern in your blouse. Open your pantry and take a look at your boxes and cans. You can find color plates, title arrangements, and even photo cluster ideas.
Once you take a moment to really look and study the things around you, the supermarket will not only bring you meal ideas, but you will find yourself racing from the checkout line to your computer.
Take a look at my pantry inspiration from an ordinary box of pasta:
I loved the idea of placing a photo vertically down the edge of my page. The name of pasta across the box reminded me of a ribbon and the theme of the food brought back memories of my trip to Rome. I knew I still had lots of photos to document from that trip so I set to work and this is what I came up with.
You'll be surprised by what inspires you, just by slowing down and really taking a good look around your environment. Now get out there and be inspired! The supermarket will never look the same again.
