The Other Side of Tomorrow
I want to be on the other side of tomorrow.
When I get there, I want to be scar free, fancy free, and care free. I want to dance in the wind, draw on the sidewalk, and laugh so hard that my pants hurt. I want to live in a spotless house, walk on a sidewalk without cracks, and never have to comb my hair. I want perfectly behaved children, cats that do not shed black hair on the couch, and a brand new wallet.
I want to be on the other side of tomorrow.
I want to close my eyes, go to sleep, and wake in the morning in a downy bed of cloudy white. I want to say everything well, smile everything better, and smooth everything over.
I want to be on the other side of tomorrow.
I want to be size 3, eat size 24, and exercise size 36. I want to sing in a choir without attending rehearsals. I want to paint like Van Gogh and keep both of my ears.
I want to be on the other side of tomorrow and get there without moving a muscle.
But life demands that I stand up, walk out of my door, open my mind, and think. Life will not allow me to escape this truth: Sometimes, it is necessary to force myself through tough walls of prickly people and pears. And sometimes it takes every soul thing I own to keep working harder, keep praying firmer, and to keep hanging onto the faith I believe is more durable than the crust that is holding me back today.
Effort is required if I am ever to arrive on the other side of tomorrow.
Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.
Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

Creating Embellishment Clusters
Tutorial created using Photoshop CS5 on a Mac
The question that I am most often asked is how do I make a cluster? When Paula Wright recently wrote an excellent article giving us an easy step-by-step recipe for creating clusters, it initiated a lot interest. Now that you are all proficiently designing clusters, I would like to suggest a few more tips that I have personally found useful!
The lovely Scrap Girls Club Collection this month, Butterfly Effect, offers a generous selection of embellishments to assemble in a variety of different ways. I have designed three types of clusters to demonstrate the versatility that can be found in this beautiful collection while suggesting a few of my favorite tips.
TIP #1: Resize and rotate elements
All of the elements on this layout are a slightly different size and have been rotated or flipped. This prevents a "cookie cutter" look.

TIP #2: Add realistic shadows
Note how the shadows from this cluster fall downward, suggesting that the light source is from above. Also note how they are not equidistant from the edges of the objects, which gives the illusion that the ribbons and leaves are lifting off the page. The shadows are on their own layer and can therefore be adjusted individually. Keep in mind that a little extra effort will give realistic results and your cluster will have more depth. Here's how:
Duplicate layer by pressing Ctrl+C (Mac: Cmd+C).
Press Alt+Shift+Backspace (Mac: Opt+Shift+Delete) to fill the layer with black.
Press Ctrl+T (Mac: Cmd+T) to get a transform outline. Arrow down and over slightly.
In the Menu Bar, go to Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur to soften the edges. Enter a radius from 2-6 pixels.
Lower the Opacity of the shadow layer to around 40-50%, depending on the darkness of your background.
With your Warp Tool, do some pushing and pulling to manipulate the shadow, tucking it under the areas that are close to the page and pulling it out where the element lifts off the page.

TIP #3: Re-invent a product to fit your needs
I wanted a curving line, so I highlighted the edge of a border from the Butterfly Effect Collection Biggie. Then using the Magic Wand Tool, I copied, pasted, and enlarged the bracket shape. Another slightly altered product is the delicate "ornament" embellishment from the Butterfly Effect Collection Biggie. I was able to create more mass to anchor the top and bottom of the edge cluster by adding a sizable stroke.

Are you needing help getting started? Then this is the challenge for you! A few hours before the chat begins, Cheri will post a link for you to download the sketch. Use it as the starting point for your page; be inspired by the basic arrangement; flip things around or scraplift the whole thing hook, line, and sinker;) This month our inspiration piece is ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Photo Masks Vintage Valentine from Amanda Fraijo-Tobin. All interpretations of the design are welcome and encouraged. Don't worry about any deadlines... post your layout when it works with your schedule. Hope to see you there!
