The Cyclical Way of Life
My grandmother often said that life goes in circles. There are periods of great highs and great lows, with the gradual increase and decrease of things in between. I have witnessed this in a profound way in the last year and a half. It has truly been amazing the changes that have happened, and if you would have asked me two years ago if I would be where I am today, I would have emphatically said, "No way!"
Looking back, I can be truly grateful for where my life is right now. It's not perfect by a long stretch, and it's not easy. It is full, though. Full of living life through the eyes of my eight-and-a-half-year-old daughter and the mysteries and adventures that are third grade. Full of keeping a house and paying the bills on a home that is my own, for the first time in my life. Full of writing fun posts on my blog, reading books on my Nook, teaching my daughter how to knit and cook, and getting ready to help my cat give birth to kittens. My house isn't always clean, and my laundry isn't always done, but I am always thankful for what I have and where I am.
One thing that has been a constant in my life is music. It plays out in different ways in different parts of my life. At one point and time, I performed all the time. In other stages, I listened to and hunted for new music and new artists all the time. Now I'm singing again, a little bit at a time, and beginning to teach piano lessons again. When I look back, almost every memory I have – good, bad, or in between – can be linked to a song. That makes me smile just to write that. I love that music almost becomes another sense for me to use; remembering these moments and the soundtrack of my life brings me great joy.
I hope that your soundtrack to life is as varied as mine. Since I view life as cyclical, it is really fun to me to hear those songs come back again on my "playlist." I think I will add a new playlist to my iPod - songs that immediately evoke a strong memory for me. What a wonderful way to remind me to give thanks!

What Are Clusters and How Do You Use Them?
Tutorial created using Photoshop CS4 with Windows 7
You love the detail of intricately layered, perfectly shadowed embellishments on your layouts, but you just don't have the time to get the look you want, right? Well, add a few cluster sets to your digital scrapbooking stash and speed things up!
"What are clusters?" you ask. I'm going to help you find out! Let's go to the Scrap Girls Boutique and look around. When you search for "clusters" in the Boutique, your return will include many cluster embellishment sets that are preassembled and ready to place on your layouts. They are layered and shadowed, so all the detail work that takes so much time is already done. Many of the clusters are designed around frames, so that all you need to do is add a background and your photos to create a terrific layout. And even better, cluster sets are most often designed to coordinate with collections you may already own, making them a valuable add-on!
Let's look at how easy it is to use clusters. First, open a new 12x12-inch document and bring in one cluster. For this project, I chose the shadowed version of cluster 2 from Bookshelf Clusters Embellishment Mini. This cluster has a photo mask, so that when placed on the layer below the cluster, it is easy to fit and position a photo into the space. Choose a coordinating paper for the background and bring that in, too.
Now bring in your photo, making sure that it's on the layer above the mask. (The mask is the gray box). Resize and position the photo over the box, and hit Ctrl+G to clip your photo to the mask. Your layers should look like this:
Now you've got your basic layout done. In this case, I've only added a paper, the cluster and mask, and a photo, but it already looks like I've done a lot of work!
You can add as much or as little to the layout as you like to complete it. Here I've added a piece of vellum behind the cluster to help it stand out a bit. I wanted a bit of a border, so I reduced the size of the paper and added a coordinating paper behind. For my title, I've added one piece of word art and an alpha letter, and I've put a bit of journaling over the lines on the label. To finish things off, I brought in another cluster bit from Bookshelf Clusters Embellishment Mini. This is a little accent cluster that isn't attached to a frame. I've painstakingly threaded baker's twine through the flowers and done all the shadow work for you! All you need to do is bring it into your layout.
Scrap Girls designers have you in mind when we design cluster embellishment sets. We know that you want professional-looking results quickly and easily. Try using clusters to give you just the results you want!
