Rewind! Rewind! Rewind!

What if we had the power to edit our life as we went through it? Would it be helpful or not? Just imagine this...

Ro: Well, Myrtle! How are you doing?

Myrtle: I'm doing great, Ro.

Ro: I'm so glad to hear that because I heard you were having a hard time. I'm glad to hear everything is okay.

Myrtle: (Stiffening) Who told you I was having a hard time? Has my sister been blabbing again? I'm going to kill her.

Ro: No, no, I didn't mean that you were exactly having a hard time. I meant that you have been going through a lot.

Myrtle: A lot? What do you mean by that? A lot - as in I have been through so many terrible things in the past three years that you have been afraid of me and that's why you have been completely ignoring me? Or a lot - as in I look like I've been run over by a truck today.

Ro: TIME FOR A REWIND

Ro: Well, Myrtle! How are you doing?

Myrtle: I'm doing great, Ro.

Ro: That's super duper. How's your husband? Did he get that new job he was applying for?

Myrtle: (Stiffening) No. He didn't get a job. He has been continually out of work for three years now. If you had talked to me at any point during the past three years, you would have known it.

Ro: TIME FOR A REWIND

Ro: Well, Myrtle! How are you doing?

Myrtle: I'm doing great, Ro.

Ro: That's super duper. I see that you've lost weight. You really look sharp.

Myrtle: (Stiffening) Yes, I have lost weight.

Ro: Tell me how you did it? I've been trying to lose weight myself.

Myrtle: It's called the diet of "not having much to eat because my husband hasn't had a job for more than three years now." If you had talked to me at any point during the past three years, you would have known this fact and wouldn't be asking me such stupid questions today.

Ro: TIME FOR A REWIND

Ro: Well, Myrtle! How are you doing?

Myrtle: I'm doing great, Ro.

Ro: That's super duper. Yep. Yep. Yep. Super duper... super duper, all right. I'm glad to hear you are doing great and are doing so... super duper.

Myrtle: How are you, Ro?

Ro: I'm okay, I guess.

Myrtle: How come you're just okay?

Ro: Want to know the truth?

Myrtle: Of course, Ro! We are old friends, and old friends can always tell each other the truth.

Ro: Are you sure?

Myrtle: Completely.

Ro: Frankly, I'm having trouble deciding what I can or cannot say to you. I keep ending up in a jam.

Myrtle: Why do you say that? Am I so sensitive that you can't talk to me? Are you afraid to talk to me? Is this why you haven't talked to me at any point during the past three years? You haven't called. You haven't written. You haven't emailed me. Is this why you have been completely absent from my life?

Ro: REWIND! REWIND! REWIND!

Ro: Well, Myrtle! How are you doing?

Myrtle: I'm doing great, Ro!

Ro: That's super duper, Myrtle. So I've been wondering... where have you been? I've been looking for you everywhere for the longest time. I've called you and written you and emailed you, but I couldn't find you anywhere. I'm so glad I ran into you today.

Myrtle: Oh. Well... I've been out of town. That's probably why you couldn't get hold of me. I just got back yesterday.

Ro: Nice! Well... got to run, Myrtle. Don't be a stranger! You know where I live, don't you?

Myrtle: Yes, I do. I'll try to remember to call you – if I get some time. I've been pretty busy.

Ro: I completely understand.

div

Of course, this conversation was completely fictitious in every single way. (Right, Myrtle?) I was just using our discussion in front of Target the other day as an example. Oh, but that didn't really happen either. And I don't know anyone named Myrtle.

Maybe it was a dream... a very bad dream.

I think it's just as well that we are forced to muddle along the best we can. God does tend to know what He is doing, doesn't He? Funny how that works.

Tips From The Pros

How to Use "Brush Set: Record It Biggie"

Tutorial created using Photoshop CS5 with a PC

Let me introduce you to one of the most versatile brush sets in the Scrap Girls Boutique - Brush Set: Record It Biggie! This Brush Set is so big that it contains doodles, photo prongs, word art, graphs, stitching, and frames - all in one!

Brush Set: Record It Biggie
Brush Set: Record It Biggie

The layout and closeups below show you several ways to use this brush set to its full advantage. First up are frames and word art. I brushed on the filmstrip brushes as a nice, dark navy blue that matches my page. For the larger frames, I used a clipping mask and clipped (Ctrl+Alt+G in Photoshop; Ctrl+G in Photoshop Elements) on a dark blue paper.

I chose to add the word art as a subtle decoration on my page. In the screenshot below, you can see "Special" on the lower corner of the envelope. If you look very carefully, "Remember When" can be seen underneath the journaling at the bottom of the page. I used the Blending Mode: Soft Light on the word art layer to achieve this subtle effect.

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Experiment with different blend modes.

Next, I wanted to add in the arrow-shaped photo prong. It definitely needed some pizzazz to make it stand out from the page and make it look like a real 3-D object. A simple bevel and emboss didn't quite do the trick, so I went to my favorite realistic digital scrapbooking trick - the styles menu! I chose a nice metallic style from Kerry Veale's ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Time Traveler 7602 Biggie, and it instantly looked like a 3-D object which could have been picked up off the computer screen.

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Add a layer style to the brush layer.

The last example I want to show you today is the stitching brush. This is a fairly short section of stitching, but it lends itself well to duplicating and repositioning for a full 12-inch border. On this page, however, I simply used a small section to anchor the ribbon at the top of the page. I was pleasantly surprised that it was designed so well that it didn't even need a stitching style (though I have more than one of those in my stash and love them!). I simply gave it a small drop shadow, and it looks perfect. If you are using only a small section of the stitching brush, don't forget to zoom in and erase any partial bits of stitching at each end. I almost forgot to do that myself!

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Duplicate layer and reposition it.

Be sure to check out the marketing images for this product as well (click the Boutique thumbnail below). Joyce Schardt has designed a lovely page that uses many of the graph brushes from the set. This is one action-packed brush set!
