Life Muse

Note from Ro: This article is a continuation of the series I began in December about my efforts to bring all of my memories, photos, memorabilia, important paperwork, and layouts together in a single location so that they won't be lost to future generations or leave my family in a mess should I unexpectedly pass away.

For multiple reasons - including ease and cost considerations, I am moving everything – including my digital scrapbooking layouts - to the 8.5x11-inch size.

I invite you to join with me and create your own Life Scrapbooks. We are the memory-and-important-documents keepers of our families. While digital scrapbooking is a fun hobby, it is very important work. If we don't do it, it is possible that all of our family records and memories could be lost for future generations. I am hoping that my Life Scrapbooks will be part of the legacy I leave behind.

You can catch up on this project in the special category we have created for it in the Scrap Girls blog.

Life Scrapbooks - Finding Solutions for Storage Problems

Today, I thought I'd share with you a couple of the storage solutions I've come up with as I move my mountain of documents to my binders.

Slides

My mother gifted me with her slides a few years ago. Most of the slides are of my parents' trip to Israel, but a number of them include some family photos that I haven't seen elsewhere. As I searched through the slides, I found a few photos of me that are particularly meaningful to me, including...

  • A photo of me that was taken a couple of days after I met my husband at a dance. I am wearing the dress that I wore that night.

  • A photo of me wearing the long church dress my mother made for me when I was in ninth grade. I loved that dress and was delighted to see it again.

  • Three photos taken at my bridal shower. I didn't know they existed, so I was thrilled to find them.

  • Two photos that were taken of me when my high school band went to the Seattle World's Fair.

  • A photo of my Seminary Choir sitting on a 4th of July float.

Since these photos were low-quality photos with significant lighting issues, I instantly understood why my mother didn't have them printed out at the time. But Photoshop came to the rescue, and I was able to improve them to the point in which they were worth printing out.

I decided to make some tiny 2X2-inch layouts with them, containing the photo and the basic information about the photo. Then I filed them next to the original slide in a special, archival page protector I purchased from Amazon.

I love how these mini layouts look in the page protectors, and I intend to make more of them when I scan in some other family photos in the group. I probably won't do one for every photo. I've discovered that the hardest thing about going through slides is that it takes my scanner quite a bit of time to scan them in.

4x6 Layouts

As I searched through Amazon's wonderful collection of 8.5x11 page protectors, I looked for some nice options for my 4x6-inch layouts. As it turned out, 4x6 is a more difficult problem to solve. I did buy one type that holds two 4x6 images along with a larger, 4 3/4 X 8 1/2-inch pocket along the top. Since that top size is so odd, I'm not exactly sure what I'll do with it. I'll probably look for opportunities to use it for memorabilia.

But I figured out an inexpensive solution for my 4x6 layouts that, while kind of unusual, makes me happy. A couple of years ago, I bought two very inexpensive albums from Walmart to hold my layouts. Each one has 50 pages, so it holds 100 images. I decided to cut out the pages, trim them, and punch holes in them so that they will fit in my three-ring binder.

Life Scrapbooks: Layouts displayed in page protectors.

Not only was this solution inexpensive, it allows me to file layouts in their proper spots. I also like the fact that there is a little bit of paper edge to them so I can make some notes by the layouts, if I want.

The point to today's discussion is this: If you need (or want to save money) as you work on your Life Scrapbooks project, look for creative solutions. Sometimes, you can find photo albums at thrift stores. Look at them closely. Maybe you can cut them up or turn them into something else. And keep your eye out for sales or special discounts on albums. I've seen albums like this turn up in piles of deeply discounted end-of-season items at Target.

Another solution for 4x6 layouts is to compile multiple layouts on one 8.5x11 image in the same manner that I have combined my 12x12 layouts. Here's an example of how I did it.

Tips From The Pros

Customizing Layer Your Own String and Disc Brushes

Tutorial created using Photoshop CS5 with Mac OS X

ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates are a fantastic tool for creating dozens of different embellihsments that are tailored to your specific project. I'm going to show you one of the many ways to customize the ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: String and Discs.

For this example, I'll be using ScrapSimple Tools – Styles: Rusted 5201 and ScrapSimple Tools – Styles: Aged Metals III Rust 8501 Biggie.

Start by dragging all of your string and disc layers on top of each other, either on your layout page or in a separate document.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Drag embellishment template layers onto layout.

Start by choosing a forgeround color to fill your string layer with. I am going to use a taupe color. Make sure the "Lock Transparent Pixels" box is checked at the top of the Layers Palette and press Option+Delete to fill that layer with your chosen color.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Lock transparent pixels.

Click on the string layer in the Layers Palette and go to your Styles menu. Click on your desired style for the string itself. I am going to be using ScrapSimple Tools – Styles: Organica 5201. You may want to test out a few different styles to see which one you like best for the look you are going for.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Add a layer style to the string layer.

Once you have chosen the style you like, you may want to adjust the layer style settings. I have mainly adjusted the bevel size and color a bit here because it started out looking too thick, in my opinion.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Adjust layer style as needed.

Now move on to the eyelets on top of the metal discs. Click on the eyelet layer in the Layers Palette and apply your chosen style.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Apply a layer style.

Now go ahead and add your drop shadow to each layer and position where you'd like on your digital scrapbooking layout!

Imagine all of the various combinations of styles you can create for string and disc closures. The discs could be fabric-covered, metal, paper, etc. The strings themselves can have the look of twine, jute, baker's twine, etc. There are so many fun possibilities!
