Life Scrapbooks - The Gathering
Project Notes (1/7/12): This week, I gathered. Looking through the boxes, bins, and files was shocking. I have been careless with some of my most valuable possessions - my family's memories.
I must remember why I am creating my Life Scrapbook:
I have decades of family photos that are going bad through neglect.
If I don't file them in a way that documents what they are, my children and/or grandchildren will throw them away because they will be meaningless to them.
A lifetime of memories will be lost because I was "too busy."
I am the caretaker of your family's history. Take care of it.
Gathering and curating my family's memories is one of the most worthy pursuits I can engage in.
Children appreciate their history more if they know what their history is.
It is easier to feel better about yourself if you know who you are and where you have come from. I want to give my family this gift.
Family stories which are told can give strength to those who follow, but not unless they are told.
Audio tapes and videotapes are deteriorating. I must move them to digital formats so they won't be lost.
I am the caretaker of all of our important family documents and financial records. If I don't gather them and file them in a better way, my family will be in a mess if I die.
Here are just a few of the photos of some of the artifacts of my GATHERING. I made this layout, printed it out, and hung it on my wall so I will remember why I need to keep at this project. It is time-consuming, but will be oh-so-worth-it in the end.
This little box has envelopes of family photos – including photos of my grandparents and great-grandparents, along with lots of film.
The most horrifying discovery of all: This folder contains photos of my husband's mission, parents, etc. The photos are yellow and curling up. Blame it on 36 years of neglect and abuse. You'd think I could have at least put them in an album, right? Now, I'm going to have to scan and clean... scan and clean... scan and clean.
But it must be done. This particular group of photos cannot be lost.
A few years ago, I had Andrew file some of my memorabilia in folders. As it turns out, he put a lot of photos in here and because they have been in storage (and not in an album), they are deteriorating as well.
I have an emergency on my hands.
I truly believe that I was inspired by God to start this Life Scrapbooks project. If I hadn't, I might not have discovered what a mess I had on my hands until it was too late.
Focused. I must stay focused. If I forget to stay focused, email me and tell me to stay focused, okay? I am doing something important here.
Your challenge: Locate every box, bin, basket, and book filled with photos, slides, film, documents, memorabilia, or anything else that could be considered candidates for inclusion in your Life Scrapbooks. Take photos of them so that you will remember what you have. This will prevent you from having to stack it all by your computer while you work, but will keep it fresh in your mind.
Do it as quickly as you can. Don't put it off or you may forget.

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. Printing Portrait Packages and Using Them in Layouts
Tutorial created using Photoshop Elements 7 with Windows 7
One of my favorite projects every year is photographing my kids and sending prints to all their grandparents. I soon discovered that I could get a better price printing all the smaller-sized photos I wanted if I assembled them on 8x10-inch prints. That was the purpose of creating my ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Portrait Package and ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Portrait Package 2. They are a quick and easy way to assemble smaller photos onto a larger print. They are sized as standard prints for easy printing at your favorite print lab.
To use the templates, open a photo you want printed and pull it into the template. Make sure you save the template with a new name to prevent overwriting the original. Clip the photo to a photo mask using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+G for PC (Cmd+G for Mac). Duplicate and rotate the photo to fit in the various photo positions. Flatten the image and save as a JPG for printing.
Now that you have printed your photos, the photo template can be easily placed in a digital scrapbook layout. Resize the photo template to fit on your layout - and now you have those photos printed and documented!
Commercial license versions of ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Portrait Package, Brush Set: Stamped Dates and Lettering Delights Mother's Typewriter Font are also available.
I love to take multiple photos with various angles. The hard part is including all those photos on a single layout. Another benefit of the photo template is a quick and easy way to layout multiple photos on one layout. Select the photos you want to use and insert them into the template. Place a different photo into each spot and place in your layout.
Commercial license versions of ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Portrait Package 2 and Lettering Delights Elf Note Font are also available.
