Your Enthusiasm is Catching
In November 2011, my husband and I celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary. We used that as an excuse to consider visiting one of the neighboring Hawaiian islands. We had never been to Kauai, and we were giddy when we realized we had enough air miles to get our flights there for free and even giddier when local friends offered to let our four children stay the night with them so we could make this little anniversary getaway a reality.
The island took our breath away. It is so country compared to the island of Oahu where we live. Chickens roam freely and pretty much rule the island. The landscape was breathtaking, green, and floral. There's a reason Kauai is called "The Garden Island!" We carefully planned our limited time and managed to pack our two-day, one-night trip to the max! We saw Waimea Canyon known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. We saw the beautiful Wailua Falls. We collected sea glass at Glass Beach. We visited the quaint town of Hanalei and even spent a few hours hiking the Kalalau Trail.
My absolutely favorite experience of the trip came near the end of the first day of sightseeing and adventuring. We had been visiting Waimea Canyon and heading toward the Kalalau Lookout when the rains and fog settled over the island. The fog was so thick that we had to drive slowly and carefully. When we arrived at the parking lot for the Kalalau Lookout after driving through the solid fog for about 15 minutes, we laughed about how ridiculously thick the fog was and how we may as well not even get out of the car because surely we wouldn't be able to see anything. But spotting some pretty flowers by the side of the parking lot, my husband couldn't resist getting out of the car to take a few pictures. Meanwhile, I wandered over to where the lookout was, laughing and holding the video camera and narrating about how silly it was that we'd even stopped because we couldn't see more than a few feet in front of us due to the thickness of the fog.
I walked to the railing of the lookout and sighed in resignation, wondering what amazing views we were missing, when suddenly the winds started to pick up and clear little peek-a-boo spots in the fog. I caught my first glimpse of the cliffs of the Na Pali Coast in the distance. Anxious for more, I held my breath and crossed my fingers, hoping for a little miracle. Within just a minute or two, the wind had swept the fog up and over the mountain, revealing the most beautiful valley below and the majestic Na Pali Coast in the distance. It truly took my breath away, and I was mesmerized.
My husband and I quickly took what felt like a million pictures, assuming the fog would settle again shortly. Another couple arrived at the lookout and my excitement about the view bubbled over in what was surely a mess of adjectives and exclamation points and a big goofy grin as I described to them what had just happened and how lucky they were to have arrived when they did so they could actually see the view.
The woman said, with a smile on her face, "Your enthusiasm is catching. Thank you!" as she and her husband walked away enthusiastically taking a million pictures of their own.

Designer Do-Over by Angie Briggs
I love the Designer Do-Over articles. It's so much fun to see how everyone's style has evolved. When I signed up for this one, I wanted to do something a little differently. I wanted to show how I could do-over a layout, not by changing up the items used, but by just moving around the items I already used and by adding very few new items.
I chose this layout that I did for a friend's wedding several years ago.
Layout by Angie Briggs
It's not that I don't like the layout, because it is still a very classic, minimally embellished layout that really shows off the photo. But I do feel it's a little too dark and I can make it more interesting to look at.
The Do-Over
The first thing I did was lighten up the photo a little bit and made it smaller. The quality of photo was not the best, so while I still wanted it to be the focus of the layout, I didn't want it to be the only thing you saw. I also removed the drop shadow I had applied to the stroke around the photo. (Can you tell I did this layout while I was still learning all the tricks of the trade?)
Next, I brought back in the black paper and added a striped paper, layering these on top of one another at angles to add interest to the layout.
Finally, I rearranged my embellishments, clustering them a little bit more so they helped showcase the photo.
And what I ended up with was a layout that looked completely different from what I started with, but all I added was one other paper.
So when you look back at layouts and think you want to redo them, keep in mind it that doesn't always have to mean starting from scratch, but could simply mean working with what you started with.
