Creating Magical Snowflakes
Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 with Windows 7
Growing up in California, I didn’t experience white winters. I remember when I moved to Washington and enjoyed my first winter snow!
We still live in Washington, but don’t get a lot of snow during the winter. The occasional snowfalls we get often melt quickly. I have a fascination with snowflakes and love creating paper snowflakes to cover my windows every winter.
I wanted some paper snowflakes for my digital scrapbook layouts to show the lace and beauty of a real snowflake. So I created ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Paper Snowflakes - Holiday Mini to add that touch of hand cut snowflakes that I decorate my windows with.
There are so many creative ways to use these snowflakes on your layouts, and I thought I might share my favorites with you. The first and easiest way is to color it. To do this, create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. In the Layers Palette, select the black-and-white circle, then select Hue/Saturation.
A dialogue box will pop-up to allow you to adjust the color. Check the "Colorize" box and adjust the sliders until you have the color you want. Once you have the color you want, select the OK button. Then group the Hue/Saturation layer with the snowflake so that only the snowflake is colored by selecting the layer and hit Ctrl+G (Cmd+G on a Mac) on the keyboard.
If this is the look you had in mind, your snowflake can be left this way... or you can embellish it more! I like to edge my snowflakes with a touch of glitter. This can be done easily with a layer style. I used ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Glitter Edge 6301 Biggie to add some glitter just around the edge of the snowflake. The default setting put too much glitter around the edge of the snowflake, but this is easily adjusted. After adding the layer style, double-click the layer style symbol on that layer to open the dialogue box. Adjust the stroke size until it suits the delicate snowflake.
Another way to decorate the snowflake template is to add a paper to it. This makes it look like the snowflake was cut from scrapbook paper. First, select a paper and place it above the snowflake template in the Layers Palette. While the paper layer is selected, hit Ctrl+G (Cmd+G on a Mac) on the keyboard. Now the paper is "cut out" in the shape of the snowflake.
You can keep it like this or you can add the glitter edge as before. This creates a stunning snowflake and is a great way to use patterns without overwhelming a page.
Another method is to use another ScrapSimple Paper Template to add some pattern over the top. A paper template with thin lines and a transparent background looks stunning on the snowflake, adding to the lacey feel of the snowflake. For this example, I used ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Bitty Pattern to add that small scale pattern to the template. Color the snowflake with the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer as earlier and place the paper template above the adjustment layer. Use Ctrl+G (Cmd+G on a Mac) to clip the paper template to the snowflake template, making it look cut out from the paper. Use a layer style or color to modify the patterned paper template.
My favorite way to modify the snowflake template is to simply add a layer style to it. My favorite is ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Golden Icicle 6401 to add that translucent sparkle to the snowflake.
Add the finished snowflake to your layout and size it to fit. Now you have the look of a hand-cut snowflake on your layout!
