ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Floral Clusters

Save 30% off this ScrapSimple Embellishment Template set today only!

Each week on Tuesdays, we will be spotlighting one designer and one of their favorite products. This product will be on sale for one day only at 30% off!

This week's designer spotlight is on Loni Harris. In a brief interview with Loni, she shared these comments with us...

I love this product because the floral cluster templates make it easy to quickly throw together a great looking scrapbook page. Also, it goes well with a variety of collections so I can get a lot of use out of it!

1. When designing a collection what do you start with first? Papers, embellishments, word art?

Definitely papers.

2. Are you an early morning designer or do you burn the midnight candle?

Early morning! By the afternoon, I'm practically useless as far as designing goes, and I have to resort to doing the dishes if I want to get anything accomplished!

12 Days of Christmas

Welcome to one of Scrap Girls' most cherished traditions - the 12 Days of Christmas newsletter celebration! We've been hosting this celebration since the beginning of Scrap Girls back in 2005. Back then, I was putting the newsletter together when I suddenly noticed that Christmas Eve was 12 days away.

Now, a 12-day event is something I love best about Christmas.

In some areas of the United States, people enjoy picking out a family in their neighborhood that they can secretly give little gifts to as a way of celebrating how grateful they are for the birth of Jesus Christ. Every evening after dark, some lucky person in the gift-giving family sneaks up to their target's front porch, deposits that day's gift, rings the doorbell, and takes off running with all their might. A successful 12-day campaign means that the receiving family never knows who has showered them with love.

Because I hadn't planned it out, the first Scrap Girls 12 Days of Christmas event was pretty simple - consisting of some extra freebies, a daily Christmas muse by me (this is when muses first appeared in the newsletter), and some neat layouts and samples. Angie Briggs quickly noticed that I needed a little help with this project – because, as I said, it was not pre-planned - and she started feeding me extra layouts for the newsletters. I'll always love her for that. She saved my bacon!

The second year (2006), without thinking through the ramifications of what it would mean for future celebrations, I decided to surprise our readers with a 12-part serial story. You know... like Charles Dickens used to write. (I'm a little nuts sometimes.) That first story – The Flight of Christmas - took me months to write and remains my favorite one to this day. (I have now written five serial stories for this annual event.)

The specially-designed set of 12 Days Embellishments first made their appearance in 2007. The games - including the Infamous Tree of Doom - made their debut in 2008.

So, as you can see, the 12 Days of Christmas event grew from me having a desire to share a little extra holiday spirit with you into an event that takes our team months to prepare for. We keep it going because it's just one small way we can let you know how grateful we are for you and your support of our company. When you refer your friends to us and share what we are doing, you help keep Scrap Girls going. Every time you shop with us, you help us maintain our Forum, our Gallery, our newsletters, our blog, and every other service we offer you. And, of course, you help us to be able to continue to provide you with the free daily downloads that you all enjoy so much!

We need you. We understand that completely. We want you to know that our team members and their families are sublimely grateful for you each and every time you choose Scrap Girls to be your source for the beautiful digital scrapbooking supplies you need to make your layouts and projects. Every time you make a purchase in our Boutique, you make a HUGE difference in many, many lives. You help keep this small business going!

This year's 12 Days of Christmas stories come from our readers who submitted them when we put out a call for amazing stories related to the holidays. Every day from now through Dec 24, you'll read a new story that will make you laugh heartily, think deeply, and maybe blink back a tear or two. We received lots of amazing stories and had a hard time picking just 12!

So here we go! This is the 2011 Scrap Girls 12 Days of Christmas event. I hope you have fun!

The Day the Gingerbread Men Disappeared

To put it quite honestly, I had an epiphany the Christmas that my older kids were 1, 2, and 3 years old. I owe it all to my cousin whose simple but wise observation changed my way of thinking - and then, my life.

I'd always been driven to make our holidays perfect. Even with those three little ones tearing about back then, Christmas had to be just so. At that particular time, we lived in a storybook cottage, and I envisioned an enchanting storybook Christmas for my family.

We had a beautiful tree already decorated, but I felt it needed something more, that special touch to make it, well... perfect. Gingerbread men! That's what it needed! I tore into my kitchen and began the preparations. Darn, the only molasses I had on hand was blackstrap. There was no going to the store for something different, not with those three kids in tow. Besides, I was a woman on a mission; I couldn't allow myself to be sidetracked with such a trivial thing. I mixed; I rolled; I cut out; I baked. All day I worked on my little black gingerbread men, poking holes in their heads for ribbon hangers and lovingly decorating them with homemade royal icing.

At last, that evening I hung them all on our tree. Perfect! They weren't exactly traditional, certainly not the expected color, but I was proud of them. We all thought they were glorious.

By the next evening, though, almost every one of my precious gingerbread masterpieces was gone from the tree. My little rascals had devoured them! I was devastated. All that work. And for what?

My cousin, Jane, came by for a visit that week. She is ten years older than I am, and she has five children. We always have plenty to talk about. I told her the story of our little black gingerbread men and lamented their loss. After a hearty laugh, she patted my hand, smiled broadly and knowingly, and simply said, "You're making memories, aren't you, girl?"

I've thought about that statement many times over the last 20-something years. That everyday conversation had a profound impact on me, on the way I live my life, and the way that I preserve and document the goings-on within my family.

Indeed, that's what we were doing that Christmas, my family and I... making memories. And oh! The memories we have made over the years!

No matter how simple or chaotic, no matter how hard our lives might be, each day we are weaving the fabric that is our lives, creating precious memories. Each day we are creating the stories that might well be told to our descendants. So...

Pay attention! The best memories are not necessarily the ones that turn out the way we planned!

Scrap Girls Club Craft: Dressing up a Pringles® Can

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Windows 7

I love to give homemade treats during the holidays, so I am always on the lookout for fun and inexpensive ways to hand out my goodies. When surfing around on Pinterest recently, I came across a fun way to turn an empty Pringles® potato chip can into a gift-giving container. Best of all, you can do this with just a little bit of effort and only a few supplies.

To get started, I measured the height and circumference of the can so I made sure my layout was big enough. I sized my document at 11x17 inches, which allowed for some extra white space. I could also fit a gift tag on the page.

I decided to make two different - but similar - layouts to use for my can covers.

Digital Scrapbook Club Tutorial: Layout sample to use as can cover.

Digital Scrapbook Club Tutorial: Layout sample to use as can cover.

After my pages were printed, I used a paper cutter to trim down the paper to just the right size. I used double-sided photo adhesive squares to tape my paper to the can.

Within a matter of minutes, my empty cans were transformed into pretty gift-giving containers.

Once my goodies have been baked and put into the can, all I have to do is use a decorative ribbon to tie on my gift tag, and my treats are ready to give out.

This project started me thinking about all the potential containers my family uses throughout the year and how they could be turned into gift-giving containers during the holidays. We'll just have to see where this leads! Stay tuned!
