The Best Christmas Gift of All
There were plenty of reasons, one good one after another, not to have another child. Once the youngest hit middle school, we started seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. When we met 19 years ago, my husband already had two kids and I had one. Wouldn't it be nice, we decided, to actually be kid-free? Get our youngest through high school and settled into college - and then we could run away from home! Simply sign the house over to the kids and go be gypsies for the rest of our lives!
Besides, I cropped up with an autoimmune disorder that discouraged pregnancy. Plenty of reasons, good reasons. Never mind that I still cried every time I heard a newborn cry. Never mind that there was a huge sense of regret in my life and an unfilled need to have just one more.
As time went on, I started looking forward to the youngest being done with high school. Instead of dreaming about diapers changes and making formula, I started dreaming about a life on the road with my favorite traveling buddy. We started a mock countdown, my husband and I. We had it all planned out.
All that and more went through my mind as I opened the pregnancy test. Surely I couldn't be. That one little change in routine on Christmas Eve couldn't be big enough to change a whole life. "Not now," I thought. "Not after I've made my peace with it. Not after I've decided I really don't want another...."
The little plus sign popped up in a matter of seconds. No hesitation, no chance to wonder. As I stood in the bathroom, I thought back to the day before, how I cried to my 21-year-old daughter, "I don't want to be pregnant," I sobbed into her shoulder. She was the one supposed to need a pregnancy test. Not me. Not at 43.
I stood and watched it grow darker, that little plus sign. Its speed of appearance and intensity of color left no doubt whatsoever. I closed my eyes and took a breath...
...and started smiling.
I'm still smiling today, as I listen to my almost 14-month-old son stir from sleep. There are times when I'm holding him, the rare times he will be still long enough to snuggle with Mommy, that I can't believe I'm not dreaming. I can't believe the gift I've been given. He is, without a doubt, the best Christmas present I've ever received.

Quote Challenge Crop

Come join Pat (PBarnes) for the Quote Challenge Crop at 7pm MT. Including a quote on your layout can be a touching and meaningful addition, especially if you use the quote to create your own word art. Here's how it will work. Early on Monday, Pat will post a thread on the Chat section of the board giving you the quote that you will use to make your own word art. It's not hard, and Pat will have a layout with a Word Art example in the gallery. Then we'll meet in the chat room to have fun, chat, and create our Word Art layout! Everyone can participate and create a layout, even if you can't make the chat. Hope to see you there!

Join April (April Showers) each Wednesday at 10am MT for the East Coast High Noon Crop. All coasts and time zones are welcome! These crops are designed to allow you to work on your own photos and themes simply giving participants a one hour goal and a fun, new challenge each week. On December 14th, we'll do a color challenge! Create a layout on any theme, any topic, using the color red. Create your layout and upload it to the special High Noon Crop Gallery. You'll be amazed what you can get done in just one hour, but there is no High Noon Sheriff timing you! Hope to see you in the chat room!
Hybrid Craft Chat
Wednesday, December 14th - 6:00PM MST
Join Carla (CRS) and Shannon (tinkerbell11) in the chat room at 6pm MT for this month's Hybrid Craft Chat. We will show you how to create a unique craft project with your digital supplies and goodies from your craft room.
December Message Board Game: BINGO!
Join us for an exciting game of BINGO on the Scrap Girls Forum during the month of December!! Pick 25 words from the list provided and send them in an email to [email protected] with a subject line that says "BINGO CARD - your Scrap Girls Message Board username" by Friday December 2 (Midnight MST) in order to play in the first round. The first round will begin on Saturday, December 3rd. If you miss the first round deadline, you can still play! Just send in your BINGO card at any time during the month, and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts.
Each day (Monday through Saturday), a member of the Welcoming Committee will call five random words from the BINGO list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call "BINGO!" in the game thread to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards will be cleared and a new round will begin the following day.
Each winner will receive a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!

December Monthly Layout Contest: For the December Monthly Layout Contest, it's all about the gifts! Scrap a layout about a gift that was extra special, either one you gave or received. Or you can scrap about something or someone you consider to be a gift in your life. Share with us what makes that gift special! Post your layouts in the December Monthly Layout Gallery before Midnight MST on December 31st. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. Two layouts will be selected to win a $10 Gift Card to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used. If your layout is chosen, it will be showcased as a Club Concepts layout winner, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
