Be one of 12 people to win $25 Christmas CASH from Scrap Girls!
Get ready to capture the magic of the Christmas and holiday season! You could be one of 12 people who will win a $25 pre-paid Visa gift card!
Let me explain...
If you are one of the many, many, many who have told me over the years how much you love, love, love my annual 12-part Christmas story, thank you! I write each story from my heart – sometimes it takes weeks and months, and sometimes the inspiration comes so overwhelmingly fast that I have been known to pump out an entire story in a two-day, no-sleep marathon.
This year, I was inspired to ask you to be part of creating a very special experience for the Scrap Girls community. You see, this year, the 12 Days of Christmas will come from your heart. That's right – YOU! I want to hear YOUR stories of Christmases past. I want to share YOUR stories of the marvels and miracles of the season.
So I'm going to do something I've never done before. I'm going to feature one story every day for 12 days, beginning December 13th. And because I want this to be extra special, I am going to award a prize that I've never handed out before...cash. The author of every story that gets selected will receive a $25 pre-paid Visa card that you can use anywhere in the world that Visa is accepted.
Here's what you need to do to be one of the 12 stories that are selected:
Write a 500-word (maximum length, please) story that tells about something you have experienced during Christmas or the holiday season sometime in the past. Or tell a story that has been handed down through the generations in your family. All I ask is that it be true (to the best of your knowledge) and somehow connected to you. (Please don't send us a retelling of something you read somewhere else!) Make this a story, a retelling of an actual event, not just a collection of thoughts about why you love Christmas or the holidays.
Was there a time when you saw something miraculous happen at Christmas or during the holidays? Can you recall a first Christmas or holiday memory with your loved one, your child, or maybe the last Christmas or holiday with your great-grandmother? We love to share good stories around here, and we don't mind having to grab a tissue, so write with all your heart to speak to our hearts!
We will edit the story as needed for clarity, grammar, punctuation, length, etc., though we will make every effort not to change the meaning of anything you write. However, the better you write, the less we have to edit, and the happier you will make our editor!
Submit a layout or a photo that goes with your story. Any layout or photo of a craft product submitted must use only Scrap Girls supplies.
You don't have to make a layout or a craft project to have your story selected, but we would like to have some kind of image such as a photograph to go with the story. People enjoy stories best when they have images to connect to.
SUBMITTING YOUR STORY
HOW YOU WILL KNOW IF YOUR STORY HAS BEEN SELECTED
Just to keep things interesting, we're not going to tell anyone if they have been selected ahead of time! You'll just have to hop out of bed every morning and rush to your computer and open up your Scrap Girls Newsletter with all the wonder of a child on Christmas morning and look to see if your story got published that day!
After the newsletter is published, we will send the daily winner the good news and will tell them how they will receive their $25 pre-paid Visa card.
I'm so excited to see what you are going to send me! I think that this year's 12 Days Newsletters will be the best yet!
Stuck Mid-Air and Upside Down
Ceaseless chanting filled the stadium. "Two, four, six, eight. Who do we appreciate? Eagles! Eagles! Eagles!"
The rowdy boys at the top of the stands threw popcorn at the girls in front of them in vain attempts to get their attention. The girls, ignoring their tormentors, stood, clapped, and shouted in the air with proper school spirit enthusiasm.
On the field, the young boys dressed as men in blue-and-white padded uniforms, prepared for another play, glaring at their opponents. They had painted black streaks under their eyes in an attempt to appear like warriors, and they pretended not to notice, as they bent over, that the other team's defensive line outweighed them by 50 pounds each.
The ball snapped back to the quarterback, who had the presence of mind to throw it across the field before he was smashed flat by an enormous, pimply-faced boy dressed in red and white. On the other side of the field, a short, red-haired boy looked up and saw the ball hurtling towards him. He jumped up, grabbed it, and took off like a shot down the side of the field, his short legs carrying him as fast as they could go.
He was lucky that day, had a good start, and the other team couldn't quite catch him. Before he realized what had happened, he was in the end zone holding the ball, and the crowd roared its approval. Touchdown!
On the edge of the field, on red, smashed volcanic rock dust that someone had decided would make an outstanding track surface, a girl with long blond hair jumped up and down, her blue, pleated skirt blowing in and out. In her excitement, she decided to attempt a round-off. She ran, put her arms out and landed on the ground, her legs up in the air. But instead of quickly flipping off to the side, she was horrified to find herself hovering in space. Time slowed and stopped. She was trapped with her legs up in the air. Fortunately, the laws of nature saved her and ever so slowly, gravity took over. Her legs came back down, landing in completely the wrong spot and she wobbled about.
She twirled about and looked at the crowd to see if anyone else had witnessed her unusual gymnastic feat. But instead of pointing fingers and laughing faces, all she saw were rowdy boys throwing popcorn, girls yelling, her fellow cheerleaders doing proper flips, and members of the football team jumping on top of each other while pounding each other's padding. Her dignity was saved.
Two years later, as she sat on a lawn one hot July evening eating popsicles with friends who played with the opposing team's band, she heard one of them say, "Remember the time that Rozanne got stuck mid-air during a round-off?"
Her head snapped forward in shock. "You saw that?"
The tallest boy said, "Yeah... we saw it. We see you all the time. We see you, Rozanne. And we like what we see."
Here's to hot days in July, popsicles, and finding out that you have true friends.

Designer Do-Over by Ang Campbell
I always enjoy taking the opportunity to re-do a digital scrapbooking layout I've done in the past. We all have those pages that never felt quite finished or quite "right."
For me, one of those pages is the layout I designed to accompany the very first product I designed to be sold in the Scrap Girls Boutique - my Christmas Carols Collection Mini. I had such fun designing the collection! It felt like my baby, and I was just ecstatic about the whole designing and learning process.
The only problem? My strength lies in designing products, not layouts. There's a reason Scrap Girls has an amazing Layout Artist Team in place, and I was really grateful to have help from those talented women when it came to marketing my product! But in an effort to be involved in the whole process of designing and marketing my very first product, I really wanted to create a layout, too. Here's what I came up with:
There are a few things about this layout that I like and a few things that people commented about positively when I posted it in the Scrap Girls Gallery. I think the red and green are nice together and an obvious traditional choice for a Christmas-themed layout. I think the simple layout composition and minimal embellishments work well with these photos since the photos are quite busy with lots of color and detail. And while the biggest comment I got on the layout referred to the way the journaling is justified to follow the shape of the Christmas tree, when I look at it, all I see is simplistic journaling without any heartfelt meaning (and some really poor spacing between words and characters in the typography, also known as "kerning").
So in an effort to keep some of these positive aspects in place while improving the areas that I felt were lacking, I tackled the do-over of this digital scrapbooking layout!
First, I realized that because of the glowing lights in the photos, there was a nice warm tone to the pictures. I want to make sure to complement this warmth with my paper choices. I also felt that since the photos had a lot of green in them, I should use any other green on my layout as accents rather than the dominant color. I kept the red paper from the original layout for the warmth and added a simple, glitter-edged, creamy paper to complement and balance the busy detail of the photos.
Next, I decided that I really liked the arrangement of the photos stacked in a clean row along one side. I moved them to the opposite side just as a personal preference choice and aligned them following the Rule of Thirds in design.
Note: The Rule of Thirds says to divide your layout into three equal parts horizontally and vertically and then place the focal point of your layout along one of those lines. In a 12x12-inch digital scrapbook layout, the lines of division will be at the 4-inch and 8-inch marks, both horizontally and vertically. In Photoshop, you can create guidelines to help you visualize the Rule of Thirds grid (View> New Guide> Choose orientation and position and then click "OK").
This is what my layout looks like with the photos centered on the vertical 4-inch grid line:
I still wanted to bring some warm green accents into the layout so I added a dark green mat behind the photos, and I adjusted the coloring of the "Oh Christmas Tree" word art to add a lighter warm green color to the layout. I felt like positioning the title along the side of the photos added some less obvious interest to the layout, and I really liked the way it looked. I did feel, though, that it still needed a bit of glitz, so I used some glitter styles added to the edges of the word art to coordinate with the glitter-edged background paper I'd layered on my digital scrapbooking layout.
Finally, I fixed the one thing that bothered me more than anything else about my original layout - the journaling! I use scrapbooking to tell my story, and the journaling I had included on my original layout was impersonal and pretty generic. I want my children and their children to understand why the photos I take are important to me and what the stories behind the photos are and that requires honest, heartfelt journaling. I took some time to do my journaling right (in the same lighter warm green I'd used for my title), I added a simple embellishment and some drop shadows, and I ended up with a layout that makes me smile and tells my story correctly.
