"I have always been drawn to things that are worn, torn, battered and old which inspired me to create this set of paper templates."

1. What is the first thing you do when you get up in the morning?

Most days, I brush my teeth first and then check my email. A few days a week, I start my day off with a little yoga.

2. What programs do you use?

Be one of 12 people to win $25 Christmas CASH from Scrap Girls!

Visa Gift Card Image

Get ready to capture the magic of the Christmas and holiday season! You could be one of 12 people who will win a $25 pre-paid Visa gift card!

Let me explain...

If you are one of the many, many, many who have told me over the years how much you love, love, love my annual 12-part Christmas story, thank you! I write each story from my heart – sometimes it takes weeks and months, and sometimes the inspiration comes so overwhelmingly fast that I have been known to pump out an entire story in a two-day, no-sleep marathon.

This year, I was inspired to ask you to be part of creating a very special experience for the Scrap Girls community. You see, this year, the 12 Days of Christmas will come from your heart. That's right – YOU! I want to hear YOUR stories of Christmases past. I want to share YOUR stories of the marvels and miracles of the season.

So I'm going to do something I've never done before. I'm going to feature one story every day for 12 days, beginning December 13th. And because I want this to be extra special, I am going to award a prize that I've never handed out The author of every story that gets selected will receive a $25 pre-paid Visa card that you can use anywhere in the world that Visa is accepted.

Here's what you need to do to be one of the 12 stories that are selected:

  1. Write a 500-word (maximum length, please) story that tells about something you have experienced during Christmas or the holiday season sometime in the past. Or tell a story that has been handed down through the generations in your family. All I ask is that it be true (to the best of your knowledge) and somehow connected to you. (Please don't send us a retelling of something you read somewhere else!) Make this a story, a retelling of an actual event, not just a collection of thoughts about why you love Christmas or the holidays.

Was there a time when you saw something miraculous happen at Christmas or during the holidays? Can you recall a first Christmas or holiday memory with your loved one, your child, or maybe the last Christmas or holiday with your great-grandmother? We love to share good stories around here, and we don't mind having to grab a tissue, so write with all your heart to speak to our hearts!

We will edit the story as needed for clarity, grammar, punctuation, length, etc., though we will make every effort not to change the meaning of anything you write. However, the better you write, the less we have to edit, and the happier you will make our editor!

  2. Submit a layout or a photo that goes with your story. Any layout or photo of a craft product submitted must use only Scrap Girls supplies.

You don't have to make a layout or a craft project to have your story selected, but we would like to have some kind of image such as a photograph to go with the story. People enjoy stories best when they have images to connect to.

  1. Submit two sizes of each image that accompanies your story:
    1. 600 px wide (72 dpi)
    2. 300 px wide (72 dpi)
  2. Attach images to email, as described below.

  1. Story should be written in a word processing program, such as MS Word or Works. If you don't have one, you can download a nice one without charge from
  2. In the document, you will include:
    • Your story
    • Your complete contact information (mailing address, phone number, email address)
    • Supply list for any layouts/craft projects images you are supplying. Give us the name of the product (must be from Scrap Girls). If you can include the link to the Scrap Girls product page, it would be super-helpful to our newsletter team.
    • Image file names
  3. Attach the document containing this story, etc. to your email.

  1. Email your story to [email protected]
  2. Subject line: My 12 Days Story
  3. Attachments, which include:
    • Story document
    • Scrap Girls publication release (Download it HERE)
    • Images (see above)
  4. The deadline for the story submission is Midnight, MST on Tuesday, December 6th.
  5. One entry per person.

Just to keep things interesting, we're not going to tell anyone if they have been selected ahead of time! You'll just have to hop out of bed every morning and rush to your computer and open up your Scrap Girls Newsletter with all the wonder of a child on Christmas morning and look to see if your story got published that day!

After the newsletter is published, we will send the daily winner the good news and will tell them how they will receive their $25 pre-paid Visa card.

I'm so excited to see what you are going to send me! I think that this year's 12 Days Newsletters will be the best yet!

Life Muse

Note from Ro: The other day, I stumbled on this article that Mandy Steward wrote in 2009. It's such a good reminder that the biggest issue all digital scrapbookers have is that we get so hard on ourselves that we forget to have fun!

7 Myths That May Be Keeping You from Digital Scrapbooking

  1. I have to create digital scrapbooking layouts like what I see in magazines or in the Scrap Girls newsletter or in online galleries. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is put away the inspiration and just go make something. It's easy to get caught up in looking at other people's beautiful creations. But when you're getting paralyzed by comparing your scrapbooking to theirs, that's when it's doing more harm than good.

  2. I must have more supplies first (i.e., Wacom Tablet, newest version of Photoshop, SLR top-of-the-line digital camera, etc.). There are always more things you can buy. Be aware if you're continuously telling yourself you can't start until you buy one more thing. This is a sign of procrastinating. Be honest with yourself. Do you really need one more thing or are you just avoiding getting started?

  3. My life must be as exciting as a blockbuster movie in order to be worth scrapbooking digitally. Your life is just as exciting as it needs to be. There are stories in your life worthy of being told. If you want to digitally scrapbook, just start with your everyday life. What makes up your daily routine? Who are the people you love? What's something you're learning in your life right now? It's not that you don't have stories to tell, it's that you haven't trained yourself to recognize the stories of your life. Once you start recognizing them, you'll find you have an endless amount of content for digital scrapbooking.

  4. I must have kids or grandkids in order to have material to create digital scrapbook pages. Who made the rule that scrapbooking has to be about kids? Browse the Scrap Girls Gallery to see some beautiful layouts about gardens, friends, books, vacations, pets, and more.

  5. I see most digital scrapbooking layouts with only one or two photos on them, but I have so many photos that I need to use. Then use a lot of photos! Remember, there are no hard-and-fast rules in digital scrapbooking.

  6. I have to digitally scrapbook every single photo I have, starting in chronological order, and I'm so behind. It is not necessary that you scrapbook your photos in order. It is also not necessary that you scrapbook all of your photos or every single event in your life. Sometimes, we put so much pressure on ourselves that it takes the fun out of digital scrapbooking all together. Just take it story by story. What story is important to you today? Start there.

  7. I have to be a computer genius to scrapbook digitally. No, you don't. It's just like anything you're passionate about doing. It will take some time, some patience, some experimenting and playing. But if you want to do digital scrapbooking, you can. Scrap Girls sets you up to succeed by offering a Newsletter and University with tutorials, a Message Board where your questions will get answered, and classes and eBooks to teach you even more.

Tips from the Pros

Defining a Border with a Shape

Note: Tutorial created Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Windows Vista

One of the appealing characteristics of digital scrapbooking is that there are many ways to use any number of tools that are available in our software platforms. Today I'm going to show you one way to use the Shape Tool and a ScrapSimple Tools: Shape to define a border on your layout.

The unique thing about ScrapSimple Tools: Shapes is that they are a vector shape. What that means is that you can you can draw them onto your layout and make them as large as you like. The shapes won't distort or lose resolution when you enlarge them.

This gives you added versatility with your creativity! The Custom Shape Tool isn't hard to find. Go to your Tools Palette, and in Photoshop, the Shape Tool is fourth from the bottom. If you click on the tiny triangle in the corner of the icon, more options open. The last option is the Custom Shape Tool. After selecting that tool, simply select which shape you want from the drop-down menu above. (You should have already loaded your Scrap Girl Custom Shapes by following the easy instructions that come with your Custom Shapes download.)

Now that you have your Shape Tool ready to go, let's look at a layout I prepared for this lesson. I designed my layout with a clean, simple look with lots of white space and a minimalist look.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Example of clean and simple layout.
larger view

However, after studying the completed layout, I decided that I want something more to draw the viewer's eye into the middle of the layout. I am going to add a shape to create a border.

To do that, select your Shape Tool. After selecting the desired shape, simply hold the Shift key, and click and drag your mouse on your layout. The shape will be drawn on its own layer. You can make it as big or small as you like. Your layer will look like this:

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Use the Custom Shape Tool to add a border on its own layer.

If you wanted a simple mat under your photos, you could clip a paper to the shape layer at this time and be done. However, to maintain the minimalist look of this layout, I don't want to clip a paper to my shape and make a big mat under my pictures. That would be too heavy a look for what I want. I have decided that I just want to outline the shape.

First, make a new blank layer above your shape layer.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Add a blank layer above the shape layer.

Then, with your mouse on the shape (vector) mask thumbnail, hit Ctrl+click to activate the "marching ants" around the shape you have just drawn. Next, with your new layer highlighted, go to Edit> Stroke and the following box will pop up.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Add a 20-pixel wide stroke to the blank layer.

I set my stroke width to 20 pixels and set a deep color. The color doesn't matter because we are going to add a style to it in a few minutes. You can play around with these parameters to decide what you like for your layout. Then hit "OK."

Turn off your "marching ants" by hitting Ctrl+D. Go back to your shape layer, and turn it off by clicking the little eye icon to the left of the layer. Yes, turn it off. We don't need it anymore because we have simply used it as a means of capturing its outline for the stroke. Since the stroke outline is on its own layer, we can turn off the actual shape, and we have remaining the stroke outline as a defined border for the overall layout.

I like this clean, elegant, yet rustic look on the layout. The shape I chose for the border not only defines the border, but it also gives a subtle amount of movement to the layout as well. Lastly, I added a ScrapSimple Tools: Style to the stroke layer to give it a finished look.

There are many ScrapSimple Tools: Shapes in the Scrap Girls Boutique. You could try this technique with any number of creative shapes to fit your theme.
