Did you know know you can freeze chicken eggs?
Do you remember that I have a homemaking blog named HowMomDidIt.com? Well, yesterday, Dick and Mary just posted the coolest post about freezing chicken eggs. Did you know know you can do that?
I had no idea.
Check this out...
Pictured are our Australorp chickens in their chicken run. The handsome rooster on the left is Emerald. The rest are pullets (they become hens at one year). They are six months old.
Imagine this scene, if you will. . .
You are puttering about the kitchen, minding your own business, when you realize you need an item from the refrigerator. Walking over to the fridge, you open the door, and scream! There are cartons full of eggs everywhere . . . eggs on the top shelf, eggs packed on the middle shelf, eggs in the crisper drawers. The only thing left in your fridge besides cartons of eggs is a tub of margarine and a half gallon of milk, and the milk carton looks a little squished for room.
Is this a scene from the latest horror movie, The Eggs That Ate Cleveland? No, this is what our refrigerator looked like last year, when we had 23 laying pullets in the chicken yard. We wanted fresh eggs, so we built a chicken house, surrounded by a fence to keep marauding animals out, and ordered some chicks.
What we failed to realize was just how many pullets we needed to keep a family in eggs. The chickens began laying eggs slowly, so we were able to keep up with the egg trickle at first. But soon, we were pulling 18 eggs a day out of the nests, and this was in winter; hens are supposed to lay even more eggs in summer. Even if we ate eggs for three meals a day, there was no way we could keep up with the steady flow coming from the hen house. What do you do with the overflow?
You freeze the eggs.

One Technique I Used on this Thanksgiving Layout
Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS5 with a PC.
I'm going to show you a quick and easy way to customize Jan Ransley's many gorgeous ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Edgers. This line of paper templates is quite elegant and reminds me of the intricately punched and die-cut designs of my paper scrapbooking days.
I wanted to create a symmetrical layout with two decorative edges, though the product itself only has one edge. Let me show you how!
First, create a new 12x12-inch document and add background paper. Then add one of Jan's ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Edgers – Nature's Bounty.
Next, duplicate Jan's paper template by right-clicking on that layer in the Layers Palette and choosing “Duplicate Layer.” Then Edit> Transform> Flip Horizontal. Bear with me, the whole document will now be gray! Click on the Eye icon to turn off the visibility of the original layer, making sure the copy is the active layer in the Layers Palette. Now, using the Rectangular Marquee Tool, left-click and drag out a rectangle 12 inches tall by approximately 2 inches wide along the right-hand/plain side of the template.
Now press the Delete key. Turn the visibility back on for the original layer and turn it off for the copy. Make the original layer active now in the Layers Palette. Again using the Marquee Tool, this time, left-click and drag a 12x2-inch rectangle on the left-hand/plain side of the template. Then press the Delete key. Turn the visibility of both layers on - and voila – you have a beautiful edge on both sides now!
The last step is to highlight both layers in the Layers Palette, right-click and choose Merge Layers from the fly-out menu.
Have fun adding papers to your new template with a clipping mask or perhaps trying out a style!
