Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. Menus - Digital Scrapbook Style
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS4
This project is one that has been needed in my home for years because I am a disorganized cook. When 5:00 p.m. comes around, naturally I have no idea what I am going to make the family for dinner. Part of me thrives off of the challenge of creating a healthy, delicious meal in 30 minutes or less – but the rest of me wishes I were more organized. I've thought for years that I needed a menu on my wall, something that would not only inform me that I need to defrost the chicken or start the rice cooking, but would also inform the kids what they are eating for dinner... and hopefully give them a say in dinner-food selection as well.
So I came up with a plan. I needed a menu that would solve (some of) my problems. I have a whole hard drive full of digital scrapbooking supplies, so of course I'm going to digitally scrapbook my menu. I chose Thao Cosgrove's Beautiful Life Collection Biggie - which ended up being an awesome choice, because she creates such great papers that have a lot of artistic elements. I literally pulled in one (one!) paper from her collection, and I had an extremely awesome background in seconds.
I could have just left my background paper alone and it still would have been awesome. But I wanted to jazz it up a little more - because this is how I am – so I brought in some more elements:
I wanted a title ("The Menu [is subject to change]" was my choice of words, so my OCD children wouldn't freak out when I made a change if I was either not in the mood to cook that particular item, or I hadn't made it to the grocery store to buy a particular item for that menu. I absolutely needed an escape clause for my menu.)
I needed a pocket for my basic 15-ish dinner options (written on a piece of paper – I needed this to be something that could update quickly and easily). (Incidentally, I also have a slip of paper that says "Mom's choice" on it, which I won't hesitate to use.)
I wanted a spot where I could attach sticky notes for my shopping list (so I can keep OCD meltdowns to a minimum, despite my escape clause).
And of course I wanted to be able to post the menu for all to see, in a visible place in my kitchen where there wasn't already something taking up the limited wall space.
This is what I came up with:
And this is the envelope pocket template I created and used:
I created this template with coordinating papers and elements from Thao's Beautiful Life Collection Biggie. I drew a few rectangles in Photoshop (dimensions were 6x3 inches), and then eyeballed how I wanted the flaps to be. Scrap Girls sells envelope templates if you don't want to create your own. You can find some great envelope templates here:
I also attached a pad of sticky notes and created a magnet piece for each day of the week.
I attached my day-of-the-week pieces to large round 1 1/2-inch flat glass pieces - you know, the kind that you use in floral arrangements? They look like smooth, flat-on-one-side, glass rocks. I attached them with Mod Podge® then hot-glued a magnet on the back.
I printed my entire creation on poster-sized paper at a local store (Sam's Club). First, I opened up a new file in Photoshop sized at 16x20-inches, and placed my menu, the envelope, and all of my magnet pieces onto the poster-sized document. Then I saved the document as a JPG, and uploaded it to the online photo site, and printed it as a 16x20-inch poster.
When I got it home, I cut everything out, folded my envelope on the lines, and glued it onto the menu.
I cut out pieces of paper, wrote my basic meal ideas on them, then slipped them into the envelope pocket. I chose our meals for the week and put them in place on the board with my magnets. I had an unused magnet board that I had been storing away for a project, so I dug it out of my stash and used magnets to attach my menu onto the board.
There are spots in the frame for photos, but I decided to use coordinating paper, print it out (on my home printer), and use it as a background for little whiteboard notes. Dry erase markers work great on glass!
I used Velcro® to attach the entire board to the door in my kitchen, which solved my lack of wall-space issue.
Now we all know what I am making for dinner, and I can remember to defrost the chicken in advance... if I look at the menu, that is. I wonder if I should stick a note into my Google Calendar to remind me to look at my menu board....
