Using Brush Set: Stick Figures - Thanksgiving to Make a Child's Apron
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS5 with Mac OS
Thanksgiving is just around the corner! It's my favorite holiday of the year. I just love to gather the family for a day of eating, relaxing, watching football, eating, laughing - and eating again! Yeah, the day does seem to revolve around eating, doesn't it?
Our family has been growing with the addition of munchkins (a.k.a., grandkids). I want Thanksgiving to be a tradition that they feel a part of and enjoy just as much as I do. Today, I will be using Brush Set: Stick Figures - Thanksgiving to create a child's apron. This project took me one hour to complete at a cost of only $3.99 – a fast and easy recipe that I love.
Now, some of these supplies I had in my craft stash, left over from a previous project, so I didn't have to buy them for this project. But even if you do spend more than $3.99, you will have products left over for your next inspired moment!
Here is a list of supplies you will need:
Let's begin. First, open a new document in your photo editing software program. After measuring the apron, I decided that a document dimension of 8.5x11-inches would work perfectly for this project.
Load Brush Set: Stick Figures - Thanksgiving into your software program and use the Brush Tool to stamp the turkey brush (or one of the other stick figure brushes included in the set) onto the first layer in your Layers Palette. I didn't change the size of the brush because it was just perfect. Please note that the brush set also includes PNG files of each stick figure that can be used instead of the ABR file. If you use the PNG file, just drag it onto your layer and adjust the size as desired.
Now, for the fun part: You are going to color the turkey! I want my design to be messy and childlike. I'm going to color outside the lines! It's great fun and gives me the feeling of being a rebel. Hee-hee!
First, create a new layer under the brush layer. Using any of the brushes included in your software program, choose a color and start to paint. (I painted my design using the "Flat Brush with Texture" that came with Photoshop CS5.) When you are ready to use another color, create another new layer below the brush layer and use that layer to paint the new color. In other words, you will have a separate layer for each color and/or selection in the design. This makes for easy editing should you decide to change something.
When you have finished coloring your design, save it as a PNG file. Make sure you have a transparent background behind your design.
You can see that I added a text layer to my design. If you include text, you will need to flip the design before printing. If you don't do this, the text will end up backwards on the apron. This is easy to do. With the PNG file open, use Image> Image Rotation> Flip Canvas Horizontal.
Now, your design is ready for printing. Use the directions included with the iron-on transfer paper to print and transfer the design to the apron using an iron.
I decided to add a cute bow and replace the apron ties with matching ribbons. I used the iron-on hem tape to adhere the apron ties. However, you could easily secure the ties by using a sewing machine. Apply Fray Check® or clear nail polish to the edges of the ribbon to prevent fraying.
My granddaughter's apron is now complete! I can't wait to photograph Adrianna in her new apron cooking alongside her Mom-Mom (me!). Before I show you the finished craft project, I'd like to share several additional kid-themed ideas to include in this year's Thanksgiving celebration.
If you have a special children's table (or even if you don't), print out placemats for the kids to color while waiting to be served. Just stamp any of the Thanksgiving figures from Brush Set: Stick Figures - Thanksgiving and print on plain white paper. Be sure to provide some crayons for each tiny guest.
Create a mini coloring book as a fun surprise. Simply use a different brush design for each page and staple the pages together using a construction paper cover. You could even add the story of the first Thanksgiving.
Have your children use crayons to decorate coordinating paper napkin rings, place cards, menus, or dinner invitations.
Whatever you decide to do, you can be sure that by combining your digital scrapbooking supplies with a little creativity will result in wonderful memories and scrap-able moments. Here's my completed apron! Happy Thanksgiving!
