I Saw My Little Girl Again
When she was little, my daughter had the sweetest little mouth. She had a beautiful smile. When she had to smile, if she was afraid or uneasy, her little bottom lip would go almost straight across with no curve. That's how I could always tell when she was uncomfortable.
When she was scared or hurt (or both), her little bottom lip would stick out in a pout in the most heartbreaking way. I could always tell when she cried if she was faking it, just crying to get her way, or if she really was hurt or scared. Her little lip had just the smallest little pout to it, wide and straight across, with just the tip of her lip pushing outward, not a round one like a child pouting because she didn't get her way. Her little chin underneath would wrinkle ever so slightly.
After she got older, she didn't let me see that crying pout nearly as often. I didn't realize until now just how precious that little pout really was to me, and that I've missed it.
When Mike and I went over to talk to her, she already knew something was up. She told me later that she knew we wouldn't come over just to bring the kids' allowance. She knew, but she was so brave. Or at least she tried to be.
I was so afraid, knowing what I had to say would hurt her. She didn't ask questions when I asked if she would have the kids go upstairs for a few minutes. She just calmly got them to do it.
I don't know how I started talking. I knew it would hurt her, but I didn't realize how she would accept it. I could see the transformation right before my eyes. When I started talking, she was the mature, adult mother that I'm so very proud of. But as she realized I was going to say the word cancer, she changed.
She became that little girl again, right in front of me. And that made me hurt even more, as if I was talking to that little girl and telling her that her mommy was sick, that she might have cancer. She didn't say a word. She just sat there quietly, struggling to stay calm, breathing harder, and pouting. Yes, she was pouting. That bottom lip suddenly lost its curve as it went wide and straight, with just the very top edge pushing outward.
As hard as it was to tell her, I got a precious gift. I got to see my little girl again. I love the adult woman, the wonderful mother she has grown into. But I have truly missed that little girl with her little pout. I'm sorry that it was so hard for her, but I'm thankful that I had that chance, that gift. I saw my little girl again.
- Lynn Maillard
