In or Out?
Random thoughts on being "In:"
It's not being left out that matters. It's jumping in.
So you were left out at some point in your life... you can come inside now.
If everyone who ever felt left out looked up from their sadness, they would see that they are surrounded by a large group of people who feel the same way.
It's not necessary to push someone out so that you can be in.
Being "in" is a state of mind rather than your GPS position.
Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.
Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

Positive and Negative Space
Have you ever heard people talking about negative space? Or maybe someone has mentioned "white space" when talking about a certain layout, and you have no idea what they are talking about because the layout being discussed has absolutely no white on it whatsoever!
Well, I'm here to put that problem to rest and to explain to you the differences between positive and negative space, also known as white space.
It's really pretty simple. Basically, positive space is the focal point. Negative (or white) space is the background or unoccupied space.
Having a layout that is composed of mostly positive space isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it will usually feel busy. That's perfectly okay if that's the feeling you are going for with the layout.
Take this layout below, for instance. I have been training for a half marathon, and I keep a log of my workouts. I use a plain, black-and-white composition book that costs less than a dollar. It's ugly, and I wanted to jazz it up. Since my journal is all about working out and getting busy, I actually wanted to have a busy and energetic feel to my cover. You'll notice that almost every part of this cover has something to look at, and it is full of inspirational words, a title, swirls, a silhouette of a runner, halftone background, embellishments, and a photo of me at the finish of my first half marathon to remind me that, yes, I really can do it again. Design-wise, there is nothing wrong with this layout, and it completely conveys the feelings I want to have when I work out – excitement and energy.

Now, most of my layouts are very different from this. I want my photos to be the focal point of my layouts and my journaling to be secondary, and I also don't want my viewers to get overwhelmed when they are flipping through my scrapbooks. In order to accomplish this, I need to give my viewers a place for their eyes to "rest."
Take a look at the two layouts below. Again, I have a couple of composition books that I use to journal my kids' school years. I don't want them to be ugly so I decided to cover them as well, and you can see those covers below. You'll notice that there really isn't any "white" background at all, yet there is a lot of "white space" on both of these layouts. On my daughter's journal, I even went so far as to blend a photo of her into the purple background paper. The photo of her and her teacher is the main focal point, yet my favorite photo of her on her first day of first grade is still beautifully represented. The blended photo doesn't take away from my "white space" or the place for eyes to rest.
The layout of my son also doesn't actually have any space that is the color white, yet there is a section that is fairly blank, and that is my negative/white space. My son is a goofball, and I wanted to show that with his silly, first-day-of-school photos, but I didn't want the whole cover to look goofy, either.
I love the way these covers turned out, and I think they will be fun for my kids to look back on when they are older.
The next time you find yourself in the middle of a conversation about "white space," feel free to chime in, because now you too are in the know!
