Fall Colors
There are a few things that signify that fall has arrived in New Mexico - the leaves of the cottonwoods in the Bosque start to turn pale yellow, the smell of roasting green chili peppers permeates the air, and the sight of hot air balloons filling the clear blue morning sky.
Every year, Albuquerque, New Mexico, hosts the International Balloon Fiesta. This year, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta again set the world record for the most balloons launched in one hour, sending 345 hot air balloons into the sky from Balloon Fiesta Park during the opening day of Balloon Fiesta. We were there! I think the total number of balloons that went up was over 600!
This is one of the most unique things about Albuquerque that I look forward to every year. If you have never been to a balloon festival or rally, you might not realize just how BIG these balloons are. They absolutely tower over you. It is quite a sight.
To catch the best part of the balloon launch, it requires getting up very early. Balloon Fiesta is one of the only occasions throughout the year where you will actually see me up at 5:00 in the morning. This year the temperatures were mild, so we didn't have to bundle up quite as much as usual. Armed with my camera and my coffee, we were on our way.
I always say that the kids love to go, but I honestly think I enjoy it a lot more than they do. I love taking pictures of the crisp fall morning with colors everywhere. It's like a rainbow exploded and dripped everywhere you look. The sky is filled with balloons of all shapes and colors drifting quietly by. In the dim light of early dawn, their burners light up the balloons like lanterns.
This year was the 40th anniversary of the Balloon Fiesta, and the weather was beautiful, so the crowds were out in full force. We weren't really as mobile as I thought we would be for taking pictures. I insisted on bringing a wagon - with extra coffee and cinnamon rolls - as a place to toss our jackets as it got warmer, as well as a way to cart around little boys who got tired of walking. The only thing was there were so many people there that we almost couldn't get to the balloons we wanted to see. It wasn't the best idea after all, although it was nice to refill my coffee.
I still was able to see some of my favorite balloons go up. One is shaped like a butterfly and stands several stories high. The colors are just amazing and bright, and it really is a neat balloon. The kids' favorite was SpiderPig. That's right - a Spiderman®-looking balloon in the shape of a pig. We got right under that one as it went up, only the winds picked up a bit, and it barely skimmed over our heads on the way. Everyone ducked as it went over; it was that close!
Inspiration is in no short supply at an event like the Balloon Fiesta, so it didn't take long for me to scrap my memories of this year's beautiful extravaganza of color!

I love the bright colors of the balloons, and I tried to capture that feeling here with the papers and embellishments. I also enjoyed making the denim-stitched clouds. Those are just plain fun!

*Note: PSD files are layered files used in Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Paint Shop Pro and certain other software packages. If your particular software title does not use the PSD file type to create layouts, don't worry! We have also included individual JPG and PNG files, which are accepted by most software titles commonly used by digital scrapbookers.

After you have finished searching, send an email to [email protected] with the subject line: "Embellishment Hunt". Include your username, the name of the product where you found the embellishment and a link to its page in the Scrap Girls Boutique for each of the sixteen items.
Emails must be received by 11:59 PM MDT on Monday, October 24th.

What are JIF Kits?
Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS5 and Windows Vista
JIF stand for "Just Insert Foto." These easy-to-use kits were created to help you create designer-quality layouts fast, but still retain the flexibility that Easy Pages are not able to provide. JIF kits include preassembled layouts in PSD form as well as PNG form. Having both of these file options mean that you can move pieces around your layout with ease. It also means that you can use the individual pieces provided with other coordinating kits!
I am using JIF 6: Eventide. If you have editing software that is capable of reading PSDs, creating a layout is as simple as opening your PSD and adding your photo using the provided layer mask.
First, place your photo layer above the Photo Mask layer. Next, clip it to the mask (Ctrl+Alt+G). Finally, add journaling using the provided text path.
That's it! Your layout is complete.
(Note: If your editing software isn't capable of opening PSD files, no worries! We included the individual PNGs in each JIF 6 kit as well.)
Since all the items included in the JIF 6 Kits are separate pieces, you can move things around, add more photos, etc. In the layout below, I took the same elements and just rearranged things a bit, as well as adding another picture.

These crops are designed to allow you to work on your own photos and themes simply giving participants a one hour goal and a fun, new challenge each week. On October 26th, we will be doing a ScrapSimple challenge! Create a layout using at least one ScrapSimple product. If you haven’t used them before, we’ll have some great ideas for you in the chat. Create your layout and upload it to the special High Noon Crop Gallery. You'll be amazed what you can get done in just one hour, but there is no High Noon Sheriff timing you! Ad Inspiration Chat
Thursday, October 27th - 7:00PM MDT
Join Pat (PBarnes) at 7pm MT for an Ad Inspiration Challenge and Chat. A few hours before the chat, a magazine, newspaper or online ad will be posted on the Forum to use as inspiration for a layout. You can use whatever you want to from the ad - the colors, the shapes, the composition. There are no wrong answers!
October Message Board Game: Product Picks
Join us for a new game in October, where we encourage you to stroll through the aisles of the boutique and do a little window shopping!
Each Monday through Saturday in October, a member of the Welcoming Committee will post the name of one or two product designers in the Product Picks game thread. You will then head to the Scrap Girls Boutique and navigate to that particular designer's product pages. Choose any of their products (your favorite product, one you like, or one you wish you owned), then head over to the Product Picks game thread and share the product name, Boutique link, and a brief explanation of why you chose that product.
At the end of the month, members who haves posted links to 42 products (one for each designer) will be entered in a drawing for one of three $10 Gift Certificates. Members who have posted links to 16-41 products will be entered in a drawing for one of two $5 Gift Certificates. And members who have posted links to 10-15 products will be entered in a drawing for one of two $3 Gift Certificates.

October Monthly Layout Contest: October is all about color! Show us those fabulous fall colors or spring colors for our Southern Hemisphere members! Maybe you have a favorite color you'd like to showcase or a very colorful photo to scrap. Remember, it's all about colors! Share those layouts in the October Monthly Layout Gallery before Midnight MT on October 31st. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties.
