Finding Inspiration
I am constantly on the lookout for inspiration, and it never seems to be in short supply! I can be taking a walk and notice how the light hits the side of a tree and wonder how I can create that look on a photo in Photoshop. Or I will see a little girl at the park wearing the cutest little outfit, and I'll think, Wow! Those colors would be amazing on a layout! And how many times have you taken a walk in the fall and noticed all the beautiful colors on the trees and fallen leaves?
But with the crisp and cold air that fall brings, I find that my outdoor walks are becoming few and far between, so I look for inspiration on the Internet. One of my favorite places to find inspiration for color combinations and to just be plain inspired is Flickr!
If you don't already have a Flickr account, I highly recommend signing up. It's free, and it's a great way to mark great photos as favorites and be able to find them easily. Plus, it's another great place to upload and share your own photos and layouts.
Below are some photos I love that I have saved into my Flickr account. The colors are so yummy and just looking at these makes me smile!
So, poke around Flickr and see what inspires you!

Tell Your Story in Pictures

It's no surprise that my 91-year-old mother is frequently asked the question, "What is your secret to staying so young?"
Although my assignment this month is to chronicle a day in my life, I thought a far more interesting approach would be to create a photographic journal of my mother's daily activities during my recent visit with her. I was hoping that I just might uncover her well-kept secrets.
Each day, my mother...
- Takes pleasure in the simple things in life.
- Communicates with God through daily devotions.
- Delights in learning and discovering.
- Considers a positive attitude essential.
- Eats a healthy breakfast.
- Is passionate about her hobbies.
- Surrounds herself with things she loves.
- Laughs out loud and from the depths of her being. (A giggle does not count.)
- Encourages friendships with young, cheerful, happy people.
- Fills her home with fresh-cut flowers (even in the bathroom!).
- Is grateful for what she has and shares her love with the world.
- Walks, stretches, and keeps moving.
Now her "secret" is out - and we can all stay young! That certainly sounds simple enough. Creating a photo story, like you see below, can be simple, too, by following a few easy steps.
First, identify a theme. It is essential that the theme be kept to one single concept. You may want to feature:
- Your hobby, such as reading, gardening, music, cooking, sports, etc.
- A person who is special in your life
- A place such as a favorite vacation spot, your home, or workplace
- An emotion or mood such as love, joy, or peace
- An event such as a birthday, graduation, wedding, etc.
Next, carefully select images that are only relevant to the theme that you have chosen. We can all agree that a picture is worth a thousand words, so if one photo can tell a story, then several photos can speak volumes! Select your very best photos that meet the following criteria:
- Subject or object fills the frame or is prominent
- Similar lighting and tone
- Complementary color palettes
- Uncluttered backgrounds
Finally, try to maintain a sense of proportion and balance when arranging photos. There is no need for guesswork when using Scrap Girls templates such as ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Stack Them 4. Select papers and elements to compliment the photos, add a title, and post your photo story layout in the Scrap Girls Gallery to share with the world!

October Message Board Game: Product Picks
Join us for a new game in October, where we encourage you to stroll through the aisles of the boutique and do a little window shopping!
Each Monday through Saturday in October, a member of the Welcoming Committee will post the name of one or two product designers in the Product Picks game thread. You will then head to the Scrap Girls Boutique and navigate to that particular designer's product pages. Choose any of their products (your favorite product, one you like, or one you wish you owned), then head over to the Product Picks game thread and share the product name, Boutique link, and a brief explanation of why you chose that product.
At the end of the month, members who haves posted links to 42 products (one for each designer) will be entered in a drawing for one of three $10 Gift Certificates. Members who have posted links to 16-41 products will be entered in a drawing for one of two $5 Gift Certificates. And members who have posted links to 10-15 products will be entered in a drawing for one of two $3 Gift Certificates.

October Monthly Layout Contest: October is all about color! Show us those fabulous fall colors or spring colors for our Southern Hemisphere members!
