I Feel Good
My mom and I had a very different relationship than many children and their mothers. We didn’t live in the same house - or even in the same state. I was raised by her parents, so our time together was seldom until I was in my late teens. At that time, we developed a very close relationship due to circumstances that we never thought would happen.
The cancer that attacked my grandmother (my mom’s mom) was unexpected, and at times, grueling. She had raised me since I was four years old, so the relationship that I had with her was very close. My grandmother’s cancer also opened doors for my mom to visit more often and for us to sort of be able to get to know each other. It was pretty awkward at times; we were two people who knew each other and knew of each other, but really had spent very little time together. We were raised by the same people, even in the same house, but our lives were very different.
One thing I found that we both had in common was our least favorite chore - washing the dishes. We would stand at the sink, side by side, and at first, we would sort of mutter at each other about the task at hand, but by the end, we were both laughing and one or both of us would be soaking wet from the hose on the sink.
One of my favorite memories of these times with my mom was the evening we were once again doing dishes and she was being grumpy. I decided to do my best to make her laugh, so I started humming the song, "I Feel Good." Noted, I did not know all the words, so I would occasionally sing "something something" instead of the lyrics. My mom finally gave up the grumpies and started singing the song - with the correct lyrics. We sang at the top of our lungs, cracking up the whole family. There was a dance routine, if I remember correctly. (I should try to forget it for all of our sakes!) We used our towels as props and slid around the floor in our stocking feet. It became a tradition from then on for us to actually ask to do the dishes together.
Even now when I'm cleaning up in the kitchen (which still is not my favorite job), I hum or sing that song. It’s a sweet memory of my mom that I will never forget. I’m very thankful that even though our relationship was not typical, it was still sweet as time went on. I’m very blessed.
Favorite Product I've designed:
Skippity Doo Dah Collection Biggie
This is one of those collections that sat on my hard drive forever. I love the colors – I use them in my home and in my wardrobe with abandon. I love the whimsical feel and the fun word art. It's one I reach for again and again when I scrap for myself.

Online Class Round Up
Once a month, we share with you the details of a recent digital scrapbooking class that has been held at Scrap Girls. I'd like to share with you about a popular class by Katherine Weaver called The Beauty of Blending Modes, for both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.
Online Class - Out of Bounds Photos
Instructor: Jene Parks
Most crafters would be hard pressed in finding a downside to computer scrapbooking, though dimensionality (or lack thereof) is always an issue that experienced digital scrappers are faced with. Shadows, textures, and perspective are often the go-to techniques for giving digital layouts a bit of oompf. Likewise, the Out of Bounds Photos online class was the perfect opportunity for digital scrapbookers to learn ways for incorporating three-dimensional appeal into photos and layouts using Jene’s favorite traditional and non-destructive techniques.
Using various methods, this class taught students how to extract and manipulate keys areas of photographs. The learning didn’t stop there, though, as students went on to learn which tools and settings to use, tips for creating and adding to selections (paths), and ideas for transforming photo perspective. Weekly homework assignments tackled topics such as identifying strong candidate photos for the out-of-bounds technique, as well as experimenting with masks and various selection tools.
This class was held over two weekly chat room class sessions. Students received class materials with step-by-step PDF instructions, including screenshots to make it easy for following along. As with all our classes, there was a private class gallery set up for students where they could post their before-and-after work and receive feedback. There was also a private class forum for the students to ask questions and share information, which was another excellent way for students to further interact with Jene. At the end of each class session, students received a transcript of the chat.
I’ve chosen two class layouts to share with you. This layout is by Jane in N.Z. from Jene’s Week #2 homework assignment:

Come join Pat (PBarnes) for the Quote Challenge Crop at 7pm MT. Including a quote on your layout can be a touching and meaningful addition, especially if you use the quote to create your own word art. Here's how it will work. Early on Monday, Pat will post a thread on the Chat section of the board giving you the quote that you will use to make your own word art. It's not hard, and she will have a layout with a Word Art example in the gallery. Then we'll meet in the chat room to have fun, chat, and create our Word Art layout! Everyone can participate and create a layout, even if you can't make the chat. Hope to see you there!

Join April (April Showers) each Wednesday at 10am MT for the East Coast High Noon Crop. All coasts and time zones are welcome! These crops are designed to allow you to work on your own photos and themes simply giving participants a one hour goal and a fun, new challenge each week. On October 19th, we'll do a Journaling Challenge. Create a layout with at least seven sentences of meaningful journaling. Create your layout and upload it to the special High Noon Crop Gallery. You'll be amazed what you can get done in just one hour, but there is no High Noon Sheriff timing you! Hope to see you in the chat room!
