Showing Off Your Layouts in an Online Gallery

You've finished a layout that you have worked very hard on, and now you're ready to show it off to the world of your friends and family. After all, that's one of the best parts about digital scrapbooking - the ability to share your digital layout almost immediately with friends worldwide!

Where do you share it? Email works just fine, but there are a plethora of online galleries out there where you can showcase your digital scrapbooking layouts. Here are just a few of the most popular ones...

  1. Scrap Girls Gallery. (You knew I was going to say that, right?) It's free. It's a great way for all of your SG friends to see your layout and “leave some love” - commenting on how much they love it. The Scrap Girls Design Team loves to see their products at work, so you just never know which designer may comment on your layout, too. Ro's even been known to browse through the Gallery, leaving love on many layouts!

But I think one of the best things about uploading to the SG Gallery is the ability to get constructive criticism on a layout, if you ask for it. When I first started digi-scrapping, I learned so much from other members who were honest and kind in their critiques of my layouts.

  2. Facebook. It's free, and it's one of the biggest social networks in the world. I like to upload my layouts to Facebook because it's the quickest way for all of my friends to see a layout. In the description, I like to mention that I used Scrap Girls products, and I always credit the designers whose products were used.

The downside to uploading on Facebook is the security. You may not want everyone in the whole world to see your layouts. However, you can set your security parameters to control who sees your pictures. Check out Facebook’s privacy settings, as well as the specific privacy settings in the photo area to limit or allow particular people/groups to see your photos. If you’ve been on Facebook for a while, you’re aware of how frequently Facebook changes or tweaks its settings, so regularly review your privacy settings to make sure they are what you want them to be.

Of course, everyone you know is not on Facebook, so they will not be able to see your layouts. Fortunately, there are more options to consider.

  3. Blogs. Most blog sites are free. A few blogging sites with more options require a monthly premium. Blogging can be a great way to show off your layouts and tell a little bit more about them. Most blog interfaces allow you to set the privacy so that you can control who may see and comment on your blog. This may be a better option for those of you who aren't comfortable with the security (or lack thereof) of social networking sites.

Here are a handful of popular blogging options:

Of course, blogging requires some time to set up your blog site, and posting on a blog can be intimidating. Many blogging sites allow HTML coding (the language that browsers use to display web pages correctly), and that can be hard to navigate if you have no previous knowledge of it.

  4. Flickr. This free online photo gallery from Yahoo is another good option. It allows you to organize your photos, tag your friends, and share your photos. You may use your Yahoo ID to sign in and create a Flickr account, and within moments, you can start uploading your layouts here.

  5. Picasa. Picasa is Google's free photo editing and organization software, but with Picasa, you can also upload photos to an online gallery called Picasa Web Albums. Picasa gives you one gigabyte of free online photo storage. You can share a lot of layouts this way!

  6. SmugMug. This option is not free, but it can also be used as an online backup of your photos. SmugMug offers advanced privacy options and watermarking to prevent anyone from snagging your photos or layouts as their own. The interface is sleek, customizable, and easy to use. I find that SmugMug is one of the few online galleries that doesn't seem to compromise the online appearance of my layouts. They appear in their full HD (high definition) glory on this site. There is a free 14-day trial for this service before you buy it.

If you are a scrap-for-hire digital scrapbooker, I encourage you to look into SmugMug. It can be a great resource for you to showcase your talents for future clients!

The list above is far from complete, but I hope it gives you some fresh ideas on how to share your favorite layouts with friends and family!

Tips From The Pros Image

Photography Focus: What is a Zoom Lens?

Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS4 on Windows XP

Zoom lenses have focal lengths that can be easily changed. The optics let the photographer change smoothly from a long shot to a close up. Each zoom lens has a specific range of focal lengths. The focal length of a lens is the distance in millimeters from the image sensor (or film, if you’re still using it) to the end of the lens. A shorter lens (under 50mm) has a wide angle of view and can capture more of what is in front of the camera. A longer lens (over 50mm) enlarges the subject and has a narrower angle of view.

One advantage of a zoom lens is that you don’t need to get closer to your subject to get tighter framing. Recently, my husband and I hiked to a local waterfall. It was several miles to the falls, and I wasn’t interested in toting along extra camera gear, so we used the 18-105mm lens that came with our camera. With this zoom lens, we were able to capture the setting of the falls with a wide angle focal length and also get a closer look with a telephoto focal length.

As you can see in the examples below, I would have needed to be up to my waist in the river in order to get the photo on the right. I’m not one to take risks like that with my camera, so the zoom lens was just what I needed.

Photography Focus: What is a Zoom Lens Tutorial Image

I find it helpful to have a variety of photos to choose from when I create digital scrapbooking layouts. The next time you are taking photos, try using a zoom lens to take close-up shots of details, as well as wider shots that show the setting. This way, your photos can tell more of the story in your scrapbook pages.
