Creating a Seamless Tile Using a Brush Set
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS4 with Windows Vista
There are several ways to use digital brushes, and today I’m going to show you how to use them to create a background. If I’m looking for a repetitive pattern, I like to create my backgrounds using a seamless tile.
First, create a 3x3-inch document and load the Brush Set: Vintage Vol.7 – Girls with Hats according to your program’s instructions. Your document can have a white or transparent background. I chose white so my brushes will stand out while I am working with them.
Start from the center of your 3x3-inch square and work your way out.
Tip: Stamp each brush on its own layer. This will allow you to easily move around the images and delete any unwanted images.
Place the first two stamps in the center as you see above. I used brushes 1 and 2 from Brush Set: Vintage Vol.7 – Girls with Hats.
Tip: Use the brackets to easily adjust the size of your brush.
Now we need to start working on images that overlap the edges. Here’s an easy way to make sure they are lined up when you apply your pattern to a full-size document.
Stamp all of your brushes in the center of the document to be sure you get the entire image and edges are not cut off. Then use your Move Tool to move around the images.
(For the purpose of this tutorial, I have lowered the opacity of the center black images and changed the color to red of the images that we are going to be moving in this step.)
One thing about seamless tiles is that what you do to one edge/corner, you must do to the opposite edge/corner. Stamp one image in red and duplicate it so that you have two of the same image.
Using the center guide on each image, move one to each side, positioning the vertical line just to the outside of the document on both sides. Make sure you have both layers selected and align them using the "Aligned Vertical Centers."
Link both layers together and now you can move them freely as long as they don’t touch the top and bottom of the image. (You can do this for the top and bottom of your document as well.)
Remember: When working with images that touch the top and bottom as well as the sides, you must cover all four corners.
Stamp the image in the middle and duplicate it three times so that you have four total images. Move each image to a corner aligning the horizontal and vertical lines just to the outside of the corner of your image, as seen in the picture above. Once you have them set, link the four layers and move them around as needed.
Now, continue to fill in the spaces with brushes. Remember to duplicate if it touches only the top and bottom or sides of the image. Create four images if it touches the sides as well as the top and/or bottom. Once you have them in place, link the layers and move them around to get the look you want.
Here is what I have so far. I think the two brushes in the center are too small. Since I have each brush on its own layer, this will be an easy fix. I can simply go to the Layers Palette and delete both images and do them again.
Here is the completed pattern. To make sure that everything lines up correctly, save your image by going to Edit> Define Pattern.
Next, open a new document and apply your pattern. Everything looks good!
If you are happy with your pattern, it’s time for some clean-up in the Layers Palette. (If you haven’t saved your document up to this point, now is a good time to do so. This way you won’t lose all of the work you have done.)
Since the images are linked, it’s easy to go in and merge the different linked images together. This will eliminate the number you have to work with and make it much easier to manage.
As you look at your images, you will notice the overlap. That is fine for most of the images, but on my pattern, there are some areas I would like to remove to better show the faces. I’ll use a Soft Round Brush paired with a low opacity to remove the unwanted areas.
Finally, recolor your brushes, change the white background color or delete it, and go to Edit> Define Pattern one more time.
You have now created your own seamless pattern! Use your Blending Modes to add even more effects. You can add it over the top of a paper or create your own.
Your only limitation is your imagination, so have fun!
