What Makes You Happy?
Many people have the wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not obtained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy cause. - Helen Keller
Her botoxed forehead didn't wrinkle as she smiled at me. "Where are you traveling?" I asked as I sat in the seat next to her.
"To Vegas. I'm going down tonight and will drive back tomorrow."
"That's a fast trip," I replied. "How come?"
She ran her fingers through her long, blonde, curly hair. "I'm going to party. My girl friend and I do it every other month. We get invitations to exclusive parties at one of the casinos because we're cute."
I stared at her. She was pretty, but I wouldn't consider her beautiful. Her faced showed the signs of a hard-partying life. Gone was the soft, clear skin of youth.
"We party with people like sports stars and Paris Hilton. The last time that Paris Hilton was there, she made an idiot of herself."
"Paris Hilton? Why do you go to these parties?"
"Because I'm looking for a husband."
As we talked more, I learned that she was 27 years old, had a son, had been abandoned by her first husband, was an astute business woman, and believed that beauty is everything.
She talked about a woman she met at one of the VIP parties. "She was in her 40s," she explained, "but she looked good because she was super thin."
"Hmm," I murmured, as she rattled on, oblivious that she had nearly told me that I am old, fat, and unattractive.
She continued to explain that it's hard to find a good man, but she was going to keep it up until she found one.
I met this girl a few years ago and had nearly forgotten her, and then one day, while reading my journal, I stumbled upon my account of the event. As I read, I considered the contrast between our positions. She sees beauty and wealth equaling success and happiness. I connect happiness with inner peace.
Chaos inside of me prevents peace. Looking outside of myself for validation from others, pursuing the acquisition of things, or seeking rewards to bring me happiness - all of these pursuits prevent peace. But when I try to improve who I am as a human being and child of God, I achieve increasing levels of happiness.
Maybe this is why Helen Keller got it right. She couldn't see people or things. She therefore found it unnecessary to judge them by their appearances or covet their possessions. She had no choice but to look for better ways of finding happiness. She found it through serving others. As she did, Helen found her way out of the dark and into a light so bright that it still shines in the world today.
I hope you find a measure of happiness today.

Inspiration from Clothing or Fabric
Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS3 with a PC
Just think of a fabric store, chock-full of beautiful color schemes, patterns, and gorgeous textures, an endless source of potential style and design. Fabric, in all its colorful glory, has often inspired me toward creativity in my digital scrapbooking layouts.
However, up until recently, I hadn't really considered a finished piece of clothing as an inspiration source for my layouts. Let's explore just what we can glean from clothing's design and shape as inspiration for digital scrapbooking layouts.
Interesting necklines on women's shirts have always attracted my eye. When on a rare, recent shopping trip sans children, I was ecstatic to find the shirt shown below. In fact, I was so excited that I asked the sales clerk if she could "just scan me" as I wished to wear it out of the store!
Curiously enough, the reason I wanted to wear the shirt out of the store was because I was on my way to scrapbook with my local group. And as I was sitting there scrapbooking with them, still thinking about my cool new shirt, I began to wonder how a layout would look with a wide curved strip at the top just like the shirt. Or, to add more interest, what would it look like to add the curved strip along the side?
...Thus, the origins of this layout below of my father-in-law posing next to a giant statue of Superman!
Whether it's a combination of colors that "speaks" to you, the style of a neckline, sleeve, button trim, or a skirt that makes you say, "Wow!", consider that the inspiration for your next layout may be as close as the fabric store - or your own closet!
