A Day in the Life: Angie Briggs

I don't know about you, but I have always been fascinated by how others go about their daily lives. It is so interesting to get a “peek” into someone else's world! I thought it would be fun to do a series of A Day in the Life articles featuring Scrap Girls staff, designers, layout artists, customers, etc.

I put on my thinking cap and came up with a list of “I want to know” questions. I asked our fabulous Angie Briggs if she would let me delve into her daily life and being the wonderful person that she is she said yes! Lucky us!

As most of you know, Angie Briggs is not only a gifted product designer here at Scrap Girls, she also takes care of all of our Customer Service as well as a host of other duties.

  1. What’s the first thing you do in the morning? Since you have kids, do you find that you pretty much have to have a routine?
My day starts anywhere from 5:00-6:00 a.m. I get up while it's still quiet, answer any emails that came in through the night, then look at the newsletter. About 6:30, I get the boys up, make their breakfast (and lunch, if they are taking it), then when they are out the door, I head out for my walk.

  2. Do you usually have your day planned out before the day starts?
Not really, I know what I need to get done, but I don't plan it out.

  3. Do you have pretty much the same thing for breakfast each morning or do you mix it up?
I will usually do a protein-based shake for breakfast and lunch.

  4. Do you have a set schedule for Scrap Girls work, designing, etc.?
I don't; there are some things that have to be done by a certain time and those are always my first things to tackle. Other than that, my days are pretty flexible.

  5. What about lunch, do you have lunch at roughly the same time each day or do you sometimes forget altogether?
I have to remind myself to eat lunch; if not, the next thing I know, the boys are walking in the door after school, and I forgot about it completely.

  6. What is a typical afternoon activity?
Once the boys get home, it's homework, snack, a short exercise session with them, and right now, football at least three nights a week.

  7. Tell us about your job as Customer Service Extraordinaire for Scrap Girls - what is your favorite type of customer service phone call?
I handle everything from the basic "do you have" question to "how to you install styles" (and everything in between). My main responsibility is taking care of the customer and making sure that all their questions/problems have been resolved (if it's something we can handle). Besides that, I also set up all the new products in the Boutique weekly, so the designers can do their finishing touches and get their product on the shelves. I also take care of getting the Scrap Girls Club and ScrapSimple Club subscriptions out to members. Plus, I schedule tutorials/freebies for the newsletter. I'm sure there are many other things I'm forgetting to list!

  8. Do you have any hobbies outside of the scrapbooking world that you do on a regular basis?

I love photography. This summer I slowed down a bit, because it was just too hot to be outside. But my favorite time of the year is coming up, and I can't wait to get back out and photographing things.

  9. Would you say working at home is easier or harder than having an “outside” job?
At this point in my life, I wouldn't trade it for the world. It allows me to not have to worry about what to do with the boys after school. If they wake up sick, I don't have to rush around finding a sitter or taking a vacation day. And being in Missouri, you never know the weather, so if school is called due to snow, it's no big deal. It does have its down side, of course. You have to be very strict about actually working some days. There are days I just want to lay on the couch, but I can't, I still have to work. And for me it's hard to "close down" some days. So if the boys and my husband are doing something I'm not involved in or watching something I'm not interested in, I find myself still working at night.

  10. You have been working out and have recently significantly reduced your weight. Way to go! Do you have a set workout schedule, and if so, we would love to hear about it!
Thanks! I try to get all my working out done by lunchtime. Typically, when the boys leave the house, I follow right after them. I walk five miles each morning, which generally takes me 80-90 minutes. I come home, have my protein shake, and answer emails. Right now, I am trying my hand at the Couch To 5K program. So if it's a "run" day for me, I'll head down and do the set amount of time on the treadmill. Once that's finished, I will generally do 60-90 minutes of Turbo Jam. Then it's shower and sometimes lunch/snack time. If it's a football practice day for the boys, I will usually walk a couple of miles while they are at practice, just to pass the time.

  11. Do you keep a journal or some kind of log to keep track of important happenings each day?
I am so not in this century... my calendar is a big desktop one where I write down everything I need to remember to do. My husband laughs at me and has offered to get me an iPhone or something similar, but give me a calendar and pen, and I'm happy.

  12. Do you make time for yourself each day or is that wishful thinking?
My exercise time is my time for myself, especially if I walk in the morning on my own. It's just me and my iPod.

  13. What would you say is your favorite part of working/designing for Scrap Girls?
I love working with the customers, especially when I’m working hard to solve a problem, and the customer "gets it," it's a great feeling!

  14. I have several extended family members that still don’t quite understand what it is that I do; what about your family and friends?
In a house of boys, mine get it...but aren't interested!

  15. Are you an early bird or a night owl?
Early bird! Sometimes so early, I still cross paths with those night owls!

Angie's office space

Angie’s office space... How cool is this? I asked her if she would please come and clean off my desk so it looks like hers!

Thanks so much, Angie, for sharing a bit of your daily life with us!

Until next time!

Tips From The Pros Image

Using a Brush as a Clipping Mask

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Windows Vista

Using a brush to create a clipping mask is a fun way to personalize your layouts! Today, I am going to show you just how easy it is to take your layouts to another level by using a brush to make your own personalized matte behind your photo.

In this layout, I was striving for white space. The lack of texture and objects in the background in this case leads the eye right to the photo. This look is very appealing to me, although I want the photo to stand out a little bit more while still maintaining a clean look.

Using a Brush as a Clipping Mask tutorial screen shot 1

A digital scrapbooking brush can be used in many different ways. Here, stamping a brush under my photo would dress it up by adding more dimension and interest. I chose Shari Johnsons' Brush Set: Halftone Circles. I liked the texture and the faded edges, but the look was too heavy for what I wanted.

Using a Brush as a Clipping Mask tutorial screen shot 2

Layer mask to the rescue! I decided that the black-and-white-striped paper from Brandy Murry's Zoomba Collection Biggie would complement the linear look of the vertical cluster in my photo. The brush layer then became a clipping mask.

To do this, I placed the paper layer directly above the brush layer, and then I clipped the two layers together. This forces the top layer to take on the shape of the layer below (Photoshop: Alt+Click while the mouse hovers over the line between the layers in the Layers Palette; Photoshop Elements: Ctrl+G). Note: Make sure the mask layer and the layer you are clipping to the mask are highlighted.

The black-and-white-striped paper now has the shape and characteristics of the brush layer below. You will know you are clipped to the mask when you see the little arrow pointing down on your layers above your mask.

Using a Brush as a Clipping Mask tutorial screen shot 3

You can see the black-and-white-stripes with the texture and the faded edges – and this is the look that I want. It replicates the vertical border and the vertical cluster. However, I have decided that the black color isn't what I'm looking for. To fix that, another paper can be clipped above the striped paper which is already clipped to the mask; simply repeat the steps outlined above. The yellow paper takes on the characteristics of the striped paper, which has the characteristics of the brush layer below, yielding yellow stripes with texture and faded edges.

This completes the look I was striving for, leaving the layout looking clean and neat with a lot of white space and a graphic edge.
