Using a Photo Mask for Journaling
Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS3 and PSE6 with Windows 7
Have you ever found it difficult to find a place for journaling when you use highly patterned papers? In this tutorial, you will be using a photo mask to create the perfect spot on your digital scrapbooking layout for your own personal journaling.
I love the texture and decoration of photo masks, and they can be found in a variety of styles. One thing they all have in common, though, is a large blank space where you are supposed to put a picture. But really, you don't have to use them just for pictures! Let me show you what I mean.
First, decide where on your layout you want to add some journaling. In my layout, I am using the patterned star paper from The Patriot Collection Biggie. It is a fun graphic paper, but between the pattern and the dark color, I really need a better spot to add my journaling. This is where using a photo mask comes in.
I decided to use ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Photo Masks – Downtown for this layout. I love the texture of the background, and I really like the embellishment on the photo mask. It adds a little something more than a plain paper would.
The only thing you need to do to transform a simple photo mask into a spot for journaling is to pick a neutral color and fill it in.
In Photoshop
In Photoshop, you can do this by double-clicking the layer to bring up your Layer Styles Palette. Choose "Color Overlay" and it will turn your photo mask bright red, but that's okay because you can change the color by double-clicking the color box and then choosing an appropriate color. You can even use the Eyedropper Tool and pick a color straight out of your background paper or photo.
In Photoshop Elements
In PSE, you can select your photo mask layer, go to your menu at the top and select Enhance> Adjust Color> Adjust Hue/Saturation. Since most photo masks start out black, you will have to adjust the Lightness slider about halfway up first so that you can see the colors you are picking. Then adjust the other sliders until you reach the color you want.
Now that my photo mask is filled in, it will be easy to add my title and journaling to my layout.
I hope you enjoyed seeing how to use a photo mask for journaling. Who knows where else you might end up using photo masks!
