Our family moved from an apartment to a house in April. It has been so wonderful to have more space to live in. We are enjoying making changes here and there to make this house our home. I like small kitchens, and this house has one. With dark cabinets and no dishwasher, I have been relishing the hunt for creative ways to turn this room into a gem.
Installing a dishwasher was one of the things my hubby and I both wanted. We hadn't had one for the past two years. I searched online, read reviews on different models, then we went to the store and ordered one. On the day that it arrived at our house, the delivery man picked up the box and carried it to the porch. I was impressed that it was light-weight enough to not need a dolly! Before I signed off on the delivery, I inspected the dishwasher for scratches and dents. It looked perfect. I was so relieved I didn't have to send it back to the store.
About half an hour later, my heart sank. There was a dent, but I hadn't seen it on my initial look-see. I spent the next few hours talking myself out of being upset. It's just a small indention. You can only see it in certain light, which is why I didn't see it at first. At least it's not a scratch. We can live with this, maybe even un-dent it.
Bill came home from work, and I pointed out the imperfection to him. He had not seen it at first either. He went into “hunky hubby mode” and was able to smooth out most of the wrinkle. That weekend he removed a kitchen cabinet, installed the dishwasher, and built some shelves to fill in a gap between the dishwasher and the stove. I love my hunky hubby.
Sometimes you can catch me talking sweet nothings to my dishwasher. I am so in love with it. No more sweltering over hot water in the summertime. No more glaring at a counter/sink of dirty dishes. It still has a bit of a dent in the bottom left corner, but I am so smitten, it doesn't matter. My little kitchen is on its way to becoming a gleaming, sparkling gem.

Using Multiple Patterned Papers
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 on a PC running Windows 7
Do you ever get a digital scrapbooking collection that has the most beautifully patterned papers - but then feel a little intimidated by them when you attempt to use one on a layout? This tutorial will give you some ways to use those beautiful papers and make your layouts shine!
For this example, I am using patterned papers from my Spice Road Collection Biggie. This collection not only contains bold, exotic patterns, but some coordinating muted prints, too. I am going to use one of these for the background paper.
Once you have opened the muted print you want to use, save and re-name it so that you don’t change the original paper. Now you can choose a bolder-patterned paper to work with. Remember, just because it’s a 12x12-inch sheet, doesn’t mean you have to use all of it at once. Using Amanda Sok’s ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates: Layout Masks, you can use the bold patterns in smaller portions by using them as clipping masks.
Make sure the bold paper is above the mask layer you would like to clip it to (in this case, a mask that will feather the pattern along the right side of the layout). Select Ctrl+G to “clip” it to that layer (or select Group with Previous from the Layer menu).
Keep in mind that you don't have to use clipping masks for all the layers. You can use the Polygonal Lasso Tool to chop out portions of papers as well. This is what I used on the teal-patterned paper. After using the Lasso Tool to make your selection, just copy and paste it into your new layout.
Now you already have three patterned papers on your layout, so there's no need to be intimidated, right? For this example, I'm going to attach even more pattered papers to the other clipping masks included on Amanda's layout template.
Now, add your photos and embellishments, and you're done! Five different patterns of papers on one layout - you'll be intimidated no longer!
Commercial license versions of Spice Road Collection Biggie and ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates: Layout Masks are also available.
