Encouragement in a Laundry Basket
Every wise woman buildeth her house; but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands (Proverbs 14:1).
You may wonder how someone could possibly find encouragement in a laundry basket.
How could such a monotonous chore of doing laundry bring me such great inspiration to share with you?
Allow me to elaborate.
Although we welcome fall with all its beauty of colorful leaves, the change into cooler temperatures has brought even greater piles of laundry, overflowing every laundry basket and hamper in the house.
Around our house, laundry is one of the biggest chores, falling second only to cooking.
Meal preparations take more time because I choose to cook mostly from scratch. It's healthier and generally cheaper.
Laundry takes more time because I am from the old school way of choosing to hang clothes out to dry on a clothesline. This saves on the electric bill which, in today's political correctness, is the equivalent to being green. Who could have thought it possible – me - being politically correct simply because I'm frugal? Anyway, it's also because I happen to love the freshness of sun-dried sheets, and I personally think the rougher the bath towel the better. No need to exfoliate!
Monday morning as I began to fill the washing machine with what would be the first of four loads for the day, I selfishly began to grumble to myself, thinking about how I had just washed two loads on Friday, three on Saturday, and now another huge pile was waiting.
Why, just think of all the things I could do today if I didn't have all these clothes to wash! Doing laundry would certainly be much more fun and probably wouldn't take nearly as long if I had a set of those beautiful, bright red, front-loading washing machines I saw at Lowe's the other night. And what if....
Stop!
Those could easily be the modern-day words of the foolish woman of Proverbs 14:1. Isn't it ironic? Every time I feel confident in my own abilities, I tend not to seek God's will for my life. I strike out on my own, not seeking His direction.
She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness (Proverbs 31:27).
Providentially, these feelings of grumbling self-centeredness didn't continue for very long. The Lord graciously led me to see that there were many blessings contained within those soiled clothes in that laundry basket.
Jeans and work shirts from a hard-working husband and dad. Anything from tractor grease, pipe glue, clay mud, and motor oil are tell-tale signs of his laborious days. Thank You, Lord, for his willingness to work hard and be a good provider for our family. And thank You for Spray 'n Wash®!
A new blouse belonging to a daughter. Thank You, dear Lord, for a daughter who is maturing into a lovely young woman before my very eyes. A daughter, choosing to live in the world, but not of it. Always conscious in her selection of modest clothing, a true reflection of her upbringing and beliefs. A tomboy at heart whose clothes can be every bit as dirty as her dad's and little brother's because she loves the farm life, too.
Jeans with worn knees and a length that's now too short. Those belong to a son who seems to have "shot up" a foot taller overnight. Always needing to check the pockets, anything from nails and marbles to rocks and little cars could be hiding there. Thank You, dear Lord, for my youngest child and all his wit and wisdom which make me smile each day. Thank You for his willingness to still hold his mama's hand when no one is looking.
Thank You especially, Lord, for Your ever-present guidance, strength, and love in helping me to see the many blessings in my everyday life. For I know that in a blink of an eye, that laundry basket will not be as full as it is now.
May you find your laundry basket filled with blessings each and every day.
- Pam Sutton

Scrap Girls' Member of the Month - September 2011
Member Name: AnnB
1. What program do you use to do your digital scrapbooking?
Adobe Photoshop CS5
2. Are you a Mac or a PC?
PC
3. Tell us the make and model of digital camera that you use.
Canon Rebel T3i EOS 600D
4. Name one thing that every beginning digital scrapbooker should know.
Do your scrapbooking to please yourself. Start simple and build on the basics; before you know it, you will amaze yourself.
5. If you could be transformed into a digital scrapbooking embellishment, what would you choose and why?
Word art, because I like to talk so much. :-)
6. What time of day do you find that you do your best scrapbooking?
In the evening after my husband has gone to bed; sometimes into the wee hours of the morning.
7. What is your favorite snack?
That's hard! Snacks are soooo very good! I waver back and forth between potato chips and chocolate.
8. What is your least favorite household chore?
All of them. Well if I have to choose one, I guess it would be dusting. Have you ever dusted a hardware store? That killed it for me when I was a kid!
9. Finish this sentence. "I couldn't live without..."
Let's do a little alliteration here... faith, family and friends. They carry me when I can't do it on my own. If I had to choose a "thing," it would be my laptop and external hard drive.
10. What's your current favorite layout that you've done?

Or how about when you learned to use your digital scrapbooking software? Share those layouts in the September Monthly Layout Gallery before Midnight MT on September 30th. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. Two layouts will be selected to win a $10 Gift Card to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
