A View of the Glass Half-Full
I consider myself a very positive person. You could say that I am a glass half-full type of person. As a teenager, one of my favorite compliments that I ever received was, “You are so bubbly.” This was from a boy I really liked, and I have always kept that memory close.
In actuality, there are days when I don’t feel like being bubbly or seeing the glass half-full. It is on those days that I have to try hard to look for the positive. But I believe that happiness is a choice. I want to spend my life here on earth looking for the positive. A recent journal entry shows this in the last paragraph. I made sure to list the positives to help me see the glass half-full.
We had the trailer packed and on the road, on our way to our annual family camping trip. We were leaving a week early because we had to make an extra stop. Delvin was going to defend his final exam and dissertation and, if he passed, receive his PhD.
After an hour on the road, we stopped at our usual stop for gas and food, in the middle of nowhere. We could smell it immediately. It smelled like burnt rubber. There was a lot of smoke coming from our tire on the trailer. We thought the trailer brakes were locked on somehow. So we ate dinner while it cooled off. We figured we could fix the pad, adjust the brakes, and be on our way. When it finally stopped smoking, we could see that it was definitely not the trailer brakes. The bearing for the left rear tire was completely burned off, and the assembly was missing.
Well, it was soon apparent that we were not leaving immediately, so we called our roadside assistance. I am so thankful that we pay for RV roadside assistance. It has saved us before when our trailer had two flats in one trip. After hours of phone calls sitting on the road beside the gas station, we could not find a local tow truck with a flatbed large enough to tow our 28-foot trailer.
Finally, as a last attempt to help, our RV roadside service gave us the number for the local police station. After several tries, we contacted the local dispatcher who sent an officer to us straight away. He called several local shops and found a tire shop only seven miles away. They thought the axle was broken, and they were fairly sure they could fix it. The only catch was we had to get it there, and they were currently closed. The officer suggested we sleep on the side street near the dead end. He promised to drive by often and keep an eye on us during the night.
So we moved the trailer and slept on the road. The next morning we got up and limped seven miles to the tire shop. We unloaded our clothes and food and drove home. That afternoon the tire shop called to tell us the axle was definitely broken, and it would take a week and a half to get the part from their supplier, if they had the part.
Well, Delvin had to rent a car and drive down to defend his final exam, while the kids and I stayed home. I work at the camp we go to every year and was obligated to be there. When we found out the tire shop had the axle, I arranged a rush order on it, because this was cheaper than renting a trailer for two weeks.
Delvin passed the presentation, but he has to do some rewrites to his thesis. So the boys and I are finally on our way to go camping, minus Daddy. We still get to see our family and friends while camping, and we will be arriving on time. I feel safe knowing that the bearings have all been repacked, and I am caravanning with some friends, in case of another mishap.
My husband, Delvin, had to stay home and finish rewriting his paper. That would have been hard to do if we had all gone to see him present with our only car and the trailer. Because of our broken axle, he did that part of the trip on his own, and I was able to take the kids camping anyway.
What have you done lately to help you see your life in a positive light? Are there challenges in your life that you feel you can’t get through? I challenge you to start listing the positives in your life right now. Don’t forget to be grateful for those mishaps that bring your family closer together or challenge you to grow. Don’t forget to be grateful for the positive outcomes to those challenges.
Favorite Product I've designed:
This and That Collection Mini
Commercial license versions of This and That Collection Mini are also available.
I wanted a collection that included the basics of most traditional scrapbook pages. I made sure to include lots of brads, staples, frames, and what-not. I was inspired by a paper bag one day and just started scanning it at different angles. Then I drew some damask-like designs. I chose a primary color scheme and some fun grunge and then enjoyed mixing it all up. The word art is a list of words that I consider basic to scrapping. I've already started pulling parts of this collection into many layouts.
Commercial license versions of This and That Collection Mini, ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Antique Effects 6401, Brush Set: RV Vacation Biggie, ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Paper Borders 6401 Biggie and Brush Set: Stained Edges are also available.

Have you ever placed embellishments on your digital scrapbooking layout and they seemed to blend into the page too much? Sometimes this is frustrating because you like the embellishment, you like the placement, but there just isn’t any dimension or depth. What’s a digital scrapbooker to do?
Well, here’s a tip I use when I run into this problem. I simply outline it and add a subtle drop shadow. Let me show you how this is done with a few very easy and basic steps.
As you can see in this layout, the yellow ribbon on the gift blends into the yellow frame and the number "2" is lost in the background as well. My first step is to add an outline.
First, I use my Eyedropper Tool to select the brown color from the circle dots on the page. Next, I make sure my blue and yellow gift layer is selected. Now, with my foreground color set as brown and my layer selected, I go to Edit> Stroke (outline) Selection. This action will open a dialog box.
I can now select an outline size, change the color, the location of the outline, and add a Blending Mode to it if I wish. I want a thin outline, so I set my width to 4 pixels. You can easily play with these options to choose a look you like best. (Note: Once a selection is made, it is permanently connected with your layer. If you don’t like it, simply press Ctrl+Z to undo it. It is best to decide if you like the look or not before you move on or you will be doing a lot of undoing to remove the outline.)
After I complete my outlining options, I clicked OK and then applied a shadow layer from ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Shadow Layer 6501 PSE to the gift layer as well.
Doesn't this look better? The outline and shadow add more depth and contrast between the two yellows. Now, I'll add the same outline to the remainder of my embellishments to complete my layout.
Commercial license versions of ScrapSimple Type Paths: Shape Up, Lettering Delights Hunkaspunk Font and ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Shadow Layer 6501 PSE are also available.
