Everyday Action: How I Read Scrap Girls Newsletter
How do you read the Scrap Girls Newsletter when it pops into your inbox? Do you simply hope to remember all the great ideas you see, the tutorials you read, and the layouts that inspire you?
I have assembled a simple system of organizing the wealth of information for future reference, and I want to share my ideas with you. Since I simply cannot keep/store all the Scrap Girls Newsletters, I have put together a way to organize and file the elements that are most important to me for future reference. Here is how I do it, knowing that everything I save, I must organize and file so it will be usable later.
I open up Scrap Girls Digital Scrapbooking Newsletter on the mail reader on my server. This could also be done on my mail reader on my computer.
I start at the top just to see the overall view, then I quickly scan down the whole page.
For the sample layout pages that I think are awesome or pages that have an idea that I might want to use in the future, I right-click on the image, then click "Save As," selecting to save as a JPG, and using the file name that was used by Scrap Girls. My computer space is not gigantic, so I probably only do this once a week. This goes into a folder under My Documents> Scrapbooking-Great Ideas.
For the "How I Did It" articles, I read each one and see if it is something I want to do or will need to do someday. I highlight the picture and the mini-tutorial, then open Word and paste it onto a blank document. I save the document as ScrapGirlsTutorial–1. Day after day, I repeat the process, adding mini-tutorials to this document until I reach about 30, then I start a new document entitled, ScrapGirlsTutorial-2, then –3, etc. I format the page with .6-inch margins on each side and two columns, so I can get more on a page and see more pictures. I have this file under My Documents> Scrapbooking-Lessons.
Then for the complete tutorials, I highlight each one in its entirety and paste it into a Word document. I save it using the file name used by Scrap Girls or change it to be in the right place under My Documents> Scrapbooking-Lessons. Or if it is about a different topic like Photography or Organizing, then that would be the topic I would file it under. Saving under "How to Add a Brush" causes problems later when I am searching, so the topic would be simplified to one word: Brushes.
When I scroll down to the Newsletter's daily freebie, I click on it (which takes me to the Scrap Girls Boutique where I scroll down to the DOWNLOAD link), then save it in the correct category, such as Backgrounds and Papers, Borders, or Embellishments (with many subcategories).
I do have a couple of categories in my files which are probably not used by any other scrapbooker: #Awesome items to use. These are single items that I love, and this topic has many subtopics like Feathers, Lace, White Items, Scrolls, Butterflies, Awesome Backgrounds, Torn Papers, Aqua and Jade items.
Another very well-used category is #To Sort. I use the pound sign (#) on both of these categories so that they will come up first in my scrapbooking files. I have filled a hard drive with 200GB just since September 2010, when I started digitally scrapbooking.
I read the Muse or the editorial, and sometimes I highlight and Save As in My Documents> Keepers–Scrap Girls Musings. There was one Muse that I not only highlighted and saved, but I sent it to friends, too. This was the one Ro wrote after the new year about New Year's Resolutions. I always write New Year's Resolutions (Goals) and another List of Accomplishments (for different categories, i.e., genealogy, sewing, etc.). But Ro's list for the year was so great, I made a form out of it.
Then – and only then - I delete the Newsletter! I have been inspired by it, learned through it, and gleaned from it.
Hope this helps you to get as much out of your Scrap Girls Newsletter as I do!
Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.
Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

September Message Board Game: Posting Contest!
It's that time again - Posting Contest time! This is where you are rewarded for your flying fingers and chattiness. The Contest will run from September 1st when we post the thread to September 30th at 12:00 Midnight (MST).
To enter the Message Board Posting Challenge, you MUST reply in the game thread with your CURRENT post count. This is the number under your Avatar that shows when you post. (NOTE: Do not post the number found on your profile; it is a different number that is calculated differently.) During the month, chat your fingers off! At Midnight on September 30th, we will calculate your post count based on the numbers posted in the original thread.
Members with Message Board posts over 50 will be put in a drawing for a $5 Scrap Girls Gift Certificate. Members with Message Board posts over 200 will be put in a drawing for both the $5 Scrap Girls Gift Certificate and a $10 Scrap Girls Gift Certificate. Members with Message Board posts over 400 will be put in a drawing for a $15 Scrap Girls Gift Certificate, as well as the $5 and $10 Gift Certificates.

September Monthly Layout Contest: The children are headed back to school, and there is a sense of learning in the air! For the September Layout Contest, share your layouts about learning a new skill! We'd love to see the stories about someone in your life learning and growing. Remember when your little one learned to ride a bicycle or your teenager learned to drive a car? Or how about when you learned to use your digital scrapbooking software? Share those layouts in the September Monthly Layout Gallery before Midnight MT on September 30th. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. Two layouts will be selected to win a $10 Gift Card to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used. If your layout is chosen, it will be showcased as a Club Concepts layout winner, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
