There's an Artist Inside
My twin sons, Ethan and Hunter, will look at characters in books, in movies, with toys, and just about anything and claim which character they are. This started at an early age. They've even seen big blow-ups waving outside of a business and claimed, "That's me!" They also love anything LEGO®. When LEGO® came out with individual mini-figures for sale, they would decide which ones they were.
Earlier this year, we were looking at the LEGO® website so they could show me which figures were on their birthday wish lists. We got to one figure, and they said, "That's you! You're the artist!" They were talking about me. Me?! I was a bit surprised. I guess I had not thought of myself as an artist. Apparently, they looked at the scrapbook layouts I created as if they were art.
After their birthday celebration had come and gone, in which they happily unwrapped their newest LEGO® mini-figures, I told them there was one more... but that it was mine. I pulled out the artist and sat him next to my computer. Over the next few days, we made some changes to him. Ethan and Hunter looked through their LEGO® blocks and brought me some female heads. I picked out one that had the faintest pink for the lips. The ones with bright red lips just didn't seem right for me. Now I had a girl artist! She had a beret on, though. They brought me all of the LEGO® girl-hair that they could find: Ponytails, short, blond... aha! A long-haired brunette version! Perfect.
I was amused at first, then inspired, by Ethan and Hunter's declaration that I am an artist. Perhaps that played a small role in my decision to apply for the Scrap Girls Product Design Team. Now, my little artist sits near my computer to remind me that there is an artist inside of me. If LEGO® ever makes a mini-figure with a laptop in one hand and a color wheel in the other, I'll be first in line to buy it! I would sit it right next to my little artist lady.
Favorite Product I've designed:
Safari Time Collection
Safari Time Collection is special to me because it was the first collection that I created. I learned so much during the process and was beyond honored and thrilled when I was accepted onto the Scrap Girls Product Design Team. The emotions that surround that opportunity and acceptance will forever be linked to Safari Time Collection. It is also helping me to create layouts of my three boys. Between the three of them, there are a lot of pictures that have stuffed animals included. I shouldn’t forget the pictures of them at the zoo... and pictures of Ethan and Hunter in their battery-powered jeeps when they were younger. I personally have many uses for Safari Time collection!
A commercial license version of Lettering Delights Quill Font is also available.

Game in a Mint Tin (Hybrid Craft)
Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop Elements 7.0 with Windows 7
There is nothing I like better than when my son comes up to me and says, "I have a craft idea. Will you help me?" This time he had a fabulous idea, and we had a lot of fun creating a game using my digital scrapbooking supplies to cover a mint tin, nine pennies, and two dice. We made a miniature version of the game called Shut the Box. I think we might make several and use them as a Christmas gifts for my son's friends.
First, prep a metal mint tin by cleaning it and sanding all the surfaces. Sanding it will help the glue adhere to the metal surface. If you wish to paint it, now is the time to do that. I liked the metal look and didn't bother to paint it.
Now, if this is to be a gift, you will want some shiny pennies. You can often get shiny pennies from the bank or just clean up a few. An old trick to clean pennies is to use ketchup. Scrub the pennies with the ketchup and then with soap. If they still need a little polish, use baking soda with a bit of water.
To design the tin covers, I used ScrapSimple Craft Templates: Mint Tin. You just need the Cover template for this project. Next, select a collection to use for the game. Since we are designing the Shut the Box game, we needed a collection with some good numbers in it.
Next, use the Top Outside template to put in the name of the game. Do not worry if your design extends beyond the lines; it will be trimmed off later. On the Bottom template, put the directions for how to play the game. I've included the instructions for Shut the Box here...
How to Play:
The Top Inside template needs the numbers 1-9 arranged nicely with enough space for the pennies to cover each number. Finally, the Bottom Inside template can have whatever design you choose. I put an encouraging phrase for the players of the game.
Once you have finished designing the look of your Shut the Box game, print it. I prefer to print my craft projects on matte, photo quality, brochure paper. Allow the image to dry overnight and then spray with a clear sealant. This helps prevent wear on the image with use. Once the sealant has dried, cut out the tin cover pieces and glue them to the tin. I love using strong, craft spray-glue for easy coverage and a good bond between the paper and the metal tin.
After the covers have dried, place the dice and the pennies inside, and you have a lovely gift for family friends or a great travel-sized version of Shut the Box to take to the restaurant and entertain the kids.
Commercial license versions of Fun And Games Collection, ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Glitter Edge 6301 Biggie and Lettering Delights Sweet Potatoes Font are also available.
