Scraplifting - What Is It and How Do You Do It?

You have most likely heard the term scraplifting, and you may have already scraplifted a layout or two. But for those of you who are not familiar with scraplifting, it means being inspired by someone else’s layout and creating your own version. This is perfectly acceptable as long as you give credit to the original layout creator wherever you post the layout. I am always tickled pink when a layout of mine is scraplifted! One of the benefits of scraplifting is how fast a layout will go together when you have something inspirational to use as a guide.

So how is it done?
You probably have already saved several layouts to your favorites in the Scrap Girls gallery and maybe marked pages in Scrapbooking magazines that have inspiring layouts. It could be the overall design that caught your eye or just the placement of a few elements or maybe even just the title. Those are perfect for scraplifting!

Start out with an inspirational layout. I have chosen the layout Adore by Angie Briggs featuring her Perfect Day Collection.

Perfect Day Collection spacer Ragamuffin Collection Biggie

A commercial license version of Perfect Day Collection is also available.

Next, decide, if you haven't already, what photos and digital scrapbook supplies you will use on your layout.

You can make your layout as close to the original as you like or just use parts of the design on your layout. More often than not, you will find yourself changing and expanding on the original layout.

Start building your layout using the inspirational layout as your guide.

I chose to use two larger photos instead of the four that Angie used on her layout.

Notice how I replaced the squares with circles on the right side of the photos.

And now, here's the completed layout. I stuck pretty close to the original design of Angie's layout - why mess with success?!

Tips From The Pros Image

Tips for Great Birthday Photos

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Windows 7

Birthday parties are meant to be recorded in photos! However, getting those awesome birthday party shots can be a little bit challenging. Here are a few things to keep in mind when trying to get great birthday photos.

  1. Assign a party photographer. Parties can be hectic, so to ensure the whole party experience is documented, give someone the job of being the photographer. To ensure you have plenty of great photos to pick from, you will need to take lots of photos. By giving someone the “job” of party photographer, you will likely have more than enough images to document the day.
  2. Consider the lighting. If the party is indoors, you will probably need some extra lighting to avoid having dark and under-exposed images. You can brighten your shots by:
    • Adding some natural lightening (consider where the best lightening is within the party space and plan ahead so you are taking photos in an area that is well lit).
    • Using a flash (also consider using a diffuser to give you a more natural look) and/or by increasing your camera ISO setting.
    • Weather permitting, you might consider moving the party outside, so you can benefit from using the available natural light provided by good old Mother Nature.
  3. Change your perspective. Shooting at the right angle will give your images a whole different look and feel. If shooting a child’s party, instead of standing up and looking down on the scene, get eye level with the child. Shooting from different angles and different focal lengths throughout the party will add variety to your images.
  4. Don’t forget the background. Birthday parties can have lots of clutter. Keep an eye on your backgrounds and see if things can be moved or you can shoot from a different angle to minimize background clutter and distractions from your shot.
  5. Remember the details. It’s often best to get some shots of the party details (cake, balloons, decorations, gifts, etc.) before the guests arrive. Again, remember to shoot at varying focal lengths and don’t be afraid to get in close and fill the frame with your subject.
  6. Go for the candid shots. Opening of the gifts is a great time to capture real emotion and make for some classic candid shots. Remember to get close so you don’t miss those authentic facial expressions.

Or how about when you learned to use your digital scrapbooking software? Share those layouts in the September Monthly Layout Gallery before Midnight MT on September 30th. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. Two layouts will be selected to win a $10 Gift Card to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
