Business Owners Do Not Sit in Parks. Or Do They?
Imagining does not make it so. Action is required.
For two long years, I imagined myself carrying a bag containing my NEO (a portable writing tool that looks much like a computer keyboard), a lunch, a bottle of water, and my small Nikon camera to the park in the gully. For two years, I imagined the sound of the trees blowing in the wind as I wrote. For two years, I saw myself answering email as I sat in a blue camp chair. For two years, I saw myself walking around the pond when I needed a break to clear my head. For two years, I imagined how I would feel as I realized that I am blessed to have a job that will let me work in the park.
And for two years, I did nothing but imagine it. I allowed myself to listen to the mean, inner voice that that smirked when it said, "Are you crazy? Business owners do not sit in parks while running their companies. Reasonable people sit at desks and look out windows as they wish they were free to lie on the grass and feel a summer breeze move their hair around their face. Adults are serious people, and you must be an adult."
But then, one morning, as I ran through the movie of upcoming day, I directed the actor to pack her bag, go to the store for a clean, dedicated blue camp chair, and then drive to the park. I told her to set up the chair, eat her lunch, and then balance her NEO on her lap. Then I watched her write muse after muse after muse, until her NEO was completely full of essays of life.
I gave myself permission to live out my very small dream.
So here I am - at last - sitting in my blue camp chair, my NEO balancing on top of my blue exercise pants, the empty Rubbermaid container serving as evidence that a lunch was made and consumed. I am here, in the park, feeling a cool breeze move my hair gently across my face and listening to the leaves rustle in the trees and my only question is...
...why did it take me so long?
Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.
Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

Documenting Labor Day
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with a PC
Labor Day has morphed from its origins into a "last hurrah" of summer. Most families seem to do something outdoors during the holiday weekend. We tend to spend Labor Day with friends, grilling out and hanging out. Though the weather is often summer-like here in Iowa for another month or more, it is the symbolic last weekend of summer. The kids run amok, jumping or climbing the fence, sliding down our play structure, and laughing with their friends.
What holiday would be complete without its menu? All holidays revolve around specific foods, and Labor Day is no exception. The men grill chicken or steaks, hotdogs, tofu, eggplant, and corn on the cob. Don't forget to serve big slices of fresh tomatoes. All the comfort foods of summer need to be involved.
Commercial license versions of ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Chipboard Edge 6301, Brush Set: Sea Glass Masks Mini, ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Subtle Photos 7601 Biggie and Lettering Delights Hoopla Font are also available.
Camping is another fine choice for outdoor fun during the Labor Day weekend. Many folks camp close to home and prefer a camper or RV. Not my husband! He and various male relatives head out to the "real" outdoors of the Boundary Water Canoe Area, where you pack in and take out everything you'll need. No matter how you camp, make sure to photograph and document a variety of camping favorites. Some ideas include the campfire, making s'mores, grilling hotdogs, talking and playing with family and friends, the lake and water activities, and the wildlife (if you're lucky and the kids didn't scare it all off).
Check out the outdoors and summer sections of the Scrap Girls Boutique now to see what fits the activities you and your family choose to celebrate Labor Day.
Commercial license versions of Campout Collection Mini, ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Curled and Torn, ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Curled and Torn Frames, This and That Collection Mini and Lettering Delights Hoopla Font are also available.

Join us for an exciting game of August BINGO on the Scrap Girls Forum!! Pick 25 words from the list provided and send them in an email to [email protected] with a subject line that says "BINGO CARD - your Scrap Girls Message Board username" by Monday August 1st (Midnight MDT) in order to play in the first round. The first round will begin on Tuesday, August 2nd. If you miss the first round deadline, you can still play! Just send in your BINGO card at any time during the month, and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts.
Each day (Monday through Saturday), a member of the Welcoming Committee will call five random words from the BINGO list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. Each winner will receive a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!
