A Designer's Life Image

Dinner for Two

I grew up in a large family- six kids plus two parents. Dinnertime was always a crazy time, and the dinner preparations were... shall we say, less than gourmet? I completely understand that with all that was going on in our busy family life, that's just the way it had to be.

When I moved out for college, I would say my eating habits followed much of the same pattern. It was a quick box of pasta wedged between my last class and running to the library to study. Or while finishing a painting in the studio late into the night, I would run to the vending machines for, heaven forbid, some Cheetos® and Dr. Pepper®!

Fast-forward a few years. My life now has (some) structure and a steady schedule to it. My husband and I both work regular hours and have steady jobs, which I am very thankful for. Neither of us is in school. During this period of "normal life," I have unexpectedly developed a love (though still novice understanding) of cooking.

I know this is old news to the rest of the world, but it has been such a wonderful, eye-opening revelation to me that cooking can be fun. I am discovering that I, myself, can prepare things at home that are just as enjoyable as going out to eat! Well, sometimes. I feel confident saying it's better than going and grabbing some fast food, but I'm still working on conquering higher levels of cooking!

My blog roll has gradually filled to overflowing with food blogs, and I can get stuck perusing them for hours without realizing it. I have my three or four favorites that I use as a "go-to" when deciding what to cook for dinner. And desserts? I won't even get started on how much I love to experiment with different yummy recipes you can find online!

I recently joined a food co-op for fresh fruit and vegetables and have jokingly thought of it as my "Mystery Box Challenge" (any fellow MasterChef fans out there?). Being confronted with a vegetable I wouldn't usually pick up at the grocery store is a new adventure that will soon be seen on the dinner plate. I will admit, I have had more than one dinner go awry because I thought it would be okay to substitute half of the ingredients for something else that I just happened to have on hand! But that's part of the fun of learning and experimenting, right?

My husband and I have also found it is an enjoyable activity to prepare dinner together. I look at this as a unique and "luxurious" stage in our life, and I am enjoying it greatly. However, it's about to change because we are expecting our first child. (It's a girl! Hooray!) Rumor has it that life changes drastically as soon as a little one arrives. The change in my life schedule is something I am planning on and welcoming, especially because it comes with such a blessing. But I hope that my husband and I can periodically still find time to prepare dinner together.

Tips From The Pros Image

What are Easy Pages?

Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS3 with Windows XP

Easy Pages are one of the simplest ways to get started with digital scrapbooking. Easy Pages are basically a prefinished layout flattened into a PNG file with a hole where you can simply drag-and-drop your photo. They are often sold in groups called Easy Page Albums which allow you to quickly create several coordinating pages into an album.

Here is an Easy Page from Easy Page Album: 12x12 Spring Song - minus a photo:

What are Easy Pages tutorial screen shot 1

To create your layout, place your photo in the layer directly under the Easy Page layer in the photo area.

That's all there is to it! If you want to further dress it up, you can add extra embellishments, text, or word art.

Games

August Message Board Game: BINGO!

Join us for an exciting game of August BINGO on the Scrap Girls Forum!! Pick 25 words from the list provided and send them in an email to [email protected] with a subject line that says "BINGO CARD - your Scrap Girls Message Board username" by Monday August 1st (Midnight MDT) in order to play in the first round. The first round will begin on Tuesday, August 2nd. If you miss the first round deadline, you can still play! Just send in your BINGO card at any time during the month, and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts.

Each day (Monday through Saturday), a member of the Welcoming Committee will call five random words from the BINGO list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call "BINGO!" in the game thread to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards will be cleared and a new round will begin the following day.

Each winner will receive a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!

For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Forum.

Contests

August Monthly Layout Contest: The temperatures are hot, and staying cool is a must! Water is a priority in the summer heat! For the August Layout Contest, we'd love to see your layouts featuring water! Dig out those photos of the kids in the pool, the family on a boat ride, or even a waterfall! Journaling about what water means to you will help make this layout more meaningful to you in the future. Post your layouts in the August Monthly Layout Gallery before Midnight MT on August 31st. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen winners, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used. If your layout is chosen, it will be showcased as a Club Concepts layout winner, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
