Make a Difference
My husband and I had just finished watching Noel's Christmas Presents, featuring Noel Edmonds giving surprise Christmas gifts or experiences to people who need something special. Well, technically they don't need anything, but people nominate various people and request that they be given a "special present" for Christmas.
The people who receive the wishes are extremely special in many ways and for lots of different reasons. One thing they all have in common is that they don't think about themselves first. Jimmy and I both knew that the program would probably have both of us in tears – and we were right.
For about 1 1/2 hours, the tears flowed and our noses ran, but they were happy tears. As the stories behind the people who received the Christmas presents unfolded, we knew that each and every person deserved their particular wish.
We both agreed that we would love to be able to give a special present. However, thinking about it more after watching the program, I realized that in our own way, we had given presents – just not in the big way shown in the program (trips to Disneyland, etc.), but in a smaller, more personal way.
Jimmy and I look after three owls, and they help us raise money for a local charity. During our fundraising, we meet a lot of people, and with the owls, we are able to touch lives in a magical way.
As I remember some of the people we have met over the years, there have been hundreds (probably thousands), but I am only going to tell you about two.
We met a little girl, about 3-4 years old, who had terminal cancer and loved owls. We decided we wanted to make the meeting special for her, so we arranged to have her photo taken with Merlin, a Tawny Owl. Her parents put the photo in a frame, and at the little girl's request, it was always on her bedside table, even when she was in the hospital. After she died, her mother told us that when anyone commented about the photo, the little girl's face would light up, and she would tell them about the day she met Merlin.
I also remember meeting a blind man and allowing him to stroke several of the birds we had with us. His face lit up like a ball of light! We let him hold three of our owls (of different sizes) so he could run his hands over them and "see" the difference in their sizes and shapes. This caused his face to light up even more, and a smile, reaching from ear to ear, appeared on his face. When we looked at his partner who was with him, she was smiling, too, and had tears running down her face.
Yes, it would be nice if we could arrange for a big, expensive present for someone, but not everyone can do that. What we are able to do with the birds is on a smaller and more personal scale – and in some cases, it can mean just as much or more than an expensive present.
Just like there will be people who say, "Do you remember when we went to Disney?", so there will be those people who say, "Do you remember when I stroked/touched the owl?"
We can all make a difference. It doesn't have to be an expensive present. Something small is just as good. A gift doesn't even have to be something that can be bought. It can even be something which is free.
In some cases, all that someone might need is a hug, a prayer, or a kind word. So go on, make a difference to someone today.

August Message Board Game: BINGO!
Join us for an exciting game of August BINGO on the Scrap Girls Forum!! Pick 25 words from the list provided and send them in an email to [email protected] with a subject line that says "BINGO CARD - your Scrap Girls Message Board username" by Monday August 1st (Midnight MDT) in order to play in the first round. The first round will begin on Tuesday, August 2nd. If you miss the first round deadline, you can still play! Just send in your BINGO card at any time during the month, and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts.

Each winner will receive a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!
