A Happy Place

I love my kitchen. Besides my frilly, feminine office, it’s my favorite room in the house. Why? Well, because the kitchen is where magic happens. Not just because it’s one of the only rooms in our home where I solely call the shots – but also because I love to cook. Or bake. Or experiment. Or reminisce. Or even organize. Yes, I said it – organize.

My kitchen is the place where dirty socks aren’t allowed. You can’t leave your shoes in my kitchen. Stray pieces of mail, and bits and pieces of this and that are also prohibited. You won’t find many prepackaged or convenience items either since I like to make most things from scratch. House and car keys on the counter? Nope. Last week’s newspaper? Tomorrow’s homework? No and no.

And now you’re probably wondering what you would find in my kitchen. So here goes...

  • My coupon binder that houses the most current manufacturer and retailer coupons, and the current week’s sale information from my four favorite stores. This allows me to purchase items before we need them, but at the very best price.
  • 72 Martha Stewart plastic and glass containers to house all my different flours, grains, and mixes. Always stocked at the ready when I need them.
  • 61 cookbooks ranging from very old to brand-spanking new. I rarely follow a recipe exactly as written, but I enjoy my ever-growing cookbook collection. It’s where I often go for inspiration. Some of the books were from my mother’s kitchen, and thumbing through them reminds me of times I spent as a young girl marveling at the lengthy recipes with their perfect photos.
  • My bread machine. I love to make fresh bread for my family. There’s almost nothing more satisfying than tossing simple ingredients into this workhorse, pressing a few buttons, then pulling out freshly baked bread just two hours and 45 minutes later. If that isn’t magic, I don’t know what is.
  • My Vitamix®... the other workhorse. I use it for everything from grinding grains into flour, making peanut butter, pesto, soup, or juice.
  • My hand-held labeler. So I can, well, label everything!

To me, the kitchen is magic. It’s where I develop new recipes and where I prepare meals for my family using the freshest ingredients. It’s where we gather for mealtimes – taking a few moments out of our busy schedules to listen and share with one another. The kitchen is my happy place. It’s where I learned from my mother and where I now teach my own children. Lessons which translate equally from stove-side to the real world... cleanliness, organization, planning, attentiveness, sharing, tradition, love.

The kitchen is where I’m often most creative and feel most at home. Many of the ideas for my digital scrapbooking layouts come to life in the kitchen. I realize not everyone gets excited about plastic containers and mixers. And I understand if you don’t get giddy over a perfectly browned pie crust like I do. We each have a spot where we find our happy place. So now that I’ve told you all about mine, send me a line and tell me about yours. Or better yet, scrap about it and send me the link.

Until then, I’ll be in kitchen labeling more containers.

Back to the Basics

Using and Organizing Fonts for Digital Scrapbooking

Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS5 with Windows 7

One of the best things about digital scrapbooking, or traditional scrapbooking for that matter, is our opportunity to make the page really speak about the memories we are preserving. We're really lucky to have beautiful papers and photos to use, but the words that we use – and how those words work – are important as well. Fortunately, the world of fonts is a smorgasbord that really never ends!

The tricky part comes when you start collecting your dozens (or hundreds, or thousands) of fonts, and your computer goes Gasp! Ack! Cough! Cough! because it doesn't like being bogged down with all of the typographical deliciousness. Our computers get boggy when we load up too much of just about anything, including our tools in Photoshop and our fonts. There are easy ways to make your love of the font world not make your computer take a nose dive into the swamp of slowness, and I'm going to give you a few hints on how!

Don't Install Everything

I know it's hard not to just dump them all in your font folder, but that will make your computer stutter along like an embarrassed teenager. Your best bet is to keep the fonts that are installed in the main folder there, if you already have them. If you have too many, find the ones that don't have to be there, and move them to another folder. In the links that follow, you can find a list of the fonts that have to be in that folder:

Windows: http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/aboutgraphics/a/fontoverload_3.htm
Mac: http://knowledgebase.insidersoftware.com/entry/26/users

Using and Organizing Fonts for Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screen Shot 1

I have a folder of fonts on my computer that are NOT installed, but I work with them in a different way. I know that some people organize their font by type (no pun intended) - serif fonts, script fonts, sans serif fonts, artistic fonts, etc., separating fonts into folders for ease of searching. I have found a way that I prefer to search through my fonts that makes it fast and easy.

Font Organizer

There are lots of programs – even free ones – that will help you organize, preview, install, and load your fonts so that they do not bog down your computer. If you search "font manager," you'll come up with lots of different programs and systems. I personally use FontExplorerL.M., which works great with my Windows 7 operating system. The things that I really like about this program is that I can search for fonts anywhere on my computer; it shows me the fonts I already have installed in one area, and then I can go to my folder of fonts that are not installed, and FontExplorer will load them for me – which means that it will temporarily install my font, but when I shut down my program (such as Photoshop), the font will no longer be installed. I love this function, because then I can try out fonts, but know that I won't be overloading my font folder.

Think Outside the Box

Fonts can be used for more than just titles and journaling. Don't forget the pretty curve of an S, or the unique shape of a V, and how they can be used together to make unique elements and shapes on your page.

Now that you know more about fonts and how to organize and use them, go explore! Find some fun fonts that speak to the feel of your pages and memories, and use them with more freedom, knowing that you're doing yourself and your machine a big favor!

Games

August Message Board Game: BINGO!

Join us for an exciting game of August BINGO on the Scrap Girls Forum!! Pick 25 words from the list provided and send them in an email to [email protected] with a subject line that says "BINGO CARD - your Scrap Girls Message Board username" by Monday August 1st (Midnight MDT) in order to play in the first round. The first round will begin on Tuesday, August 2nd. If you miss the first round deadline, you can still play! Just send in your BINGO card at any time during the month, and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts.

Each day (Monday through Saturday), a member of the Welcoming Committee will call five random words from the BINGO list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call "BINGO!" in the game thread to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards will be cleared and a new round will begin the following day.

Each winner will receive a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!

For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Forum.

Contests

August Monthly Layout Contest: The temperatures are hot, and staying cool is a must! Water is a priority in the summer heat! For the August Layout Contest, we'd love to see your layouts featuring water! Dig out those photos of the kids in the pool, the family on a boat ride, or even a waterfall! Journaling about what water means to you will help make this layout more meaningful to you in the future. Post your layouts in the August Monthly Layout Gallery before Midnight MT on August 31st. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen winners, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used. If your layout is chosen, it will be showcased as a Club Concepts layout winner, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
