What Digital Scrapbooking Has Taught Me (in a Very Short Amount of Time)
I am a busy mom with a job, a husband, and three children under the age of 10 (the order of importance is definitely not in that order). Life is lived in the now, where things get done; fires are put out for the day, the kids are driven to their various activities, and not much time is spent "thinking," only "doing"... at least until I discovered digital scrapbooking.
Now, mind you, I am very new to this hobby, only really getting into it within the last couple of weeks. In my limited arena of two completed layouts (but boy, am I proud of those two!), I am finding that the journaling portion of my layout is the most challenging and most frustrating. This part of the process forces me to sit and think, sit and reflect, sit and reminisce. This is something that does not come naturally for me, nor does it come as quickly as I'd like.
Maybe that's okay, though... maybe this newfound interest isn't all about getting the layouts done, but rather, helping me to sit back and reflect and think about life as it passes me by. Maybe it's about helping me to savor the moments rather than get them checked off the list and onto the next one.
I had always looked at digital scrapbooking as a means to an end: Get the photos off my camera and onto something tangible the kids can look at. But that's not the end. The end is not a bound book to lay on the coffee table, but instead, an opportunity to pass on a legacy of stories and dreams that will live on because I stopped "doing, doing, doing" and sat down to start reflecting.
That doesn't make the journaling flow any easier, but as this new hobby births a renewed mom with a refreshed outlook, it certainly makes the days more enjoyable, even if I am still putting out daily fires in the here and now.
- Amy S.
Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.
Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

Scrap Girls' Member of the Month - August 2011
Member Name: PolkaDot
1. What program do you use to do your digital scrapbooking?
I enjoy using Photoshop CS5.
2. Are you a Mac or a PC?
I'm a PC, and I like it very much.
3. Tell us the make and model of digital camera that you use.
I use a Canon Powershot SX 130 IS, mainly on Auto setting.
4. Name one thing that every beginning digital scrapbooker should know.
It all adds up! Each new layout uses skills you've learned and adds a new one (or two!). If you get stuck, ask. Give yourself time to learn and enjoy the process. Finally, the daily Scrap Girls Newsletters and Challenges are a fantastic source of inspiration and are what really helped me learn digi-scrapping!
5. If you could be transformed into a digital scrapbooking embellishment, what would you choose and why?
Anything I could make with a brush! I enjoy using the Scrap Girls brushes so much, especially since taking the wonderful classes offered at Scrap Girls. Brushes opened up a whole world of embellishing for me. I think they are so versatile, and with colors, filters, Blending Modes, and styles applied, brushes are limitless in fun and their ability to decorate a page. The brushes offered at Scrap Girls are just perfect for scrapbook work, and there are so many from which to choose!
6. What time of day do you find that you do your best scrapbooking?
Not day! It's nighttime - the later, the better, right up until dawn.
7. What is your favorite snack?
Breyer's Vanilla Ice Cream. Plain. No add-ins! A close second is plain popcorn. Dry, no butter or flavoring. (I sense a theme!)
8. What is your least favorite household chore?
Easy answer: Dusting. It never ends, does it?
9. Finish this sentence. "I couldn't live without..."
My faith in God, my husband and family, my friends, my freedom, and my ability to read. I could live without my computer, but I wouldn't like it very much!
10. What's your current favorite layout that you've done?
Commercial license versions of ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Aged Metals III Rust 8501 Biggie, Brush Set: Grandparents 1, Altered Art Collection Biggie, Innocence Collection Biggie, ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Lifted Photos - Doubles Biggie, ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Photo Basics 5001, Dynamic Brush Set: Spellbound, ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Basic Shadows 6501 and ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Peeled Paint 5701 are also available.

August Message Board Game: BINGO!
Join us for an exciting game of August BINGO on the Scrap Girls Forum!! Pick 25 words from the list provided and send them in an email to [email protected] with a subject line that says "BINGO CARD - your Scrap Girls Message Board username" by Monday August 1st (Midnight MDT) in order to play in the first round. The first round will begin on Tuesday, August 2nd. If you miss the first round deadline, you can still play! Just send in your BINGO card at any time during the month, and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts.
Each day (Monday through Saturday), a member of the Welcoming Committee will call five random words from the BINGO list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call "BINGO!" in the game thread to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards will be cleared and a new round will begin the following day.
Each winner will receive a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!
