Printers with Individual Color Inks

With so many printers on the market these days, it can be quite an undertaking to decide on and ultimately purchase a printer. The printers themselves are usually reasonably priced, but have you noticed that the inks are the costly part of the printing equation?

One way to cut down on ink costs is to choose a printer with individual color and black ink cartridges. In the past few years, the individual cartridges for colors and black ink have become quite popular. So what exactly are the benefits of individual inks?

The biggest benefit of these individual inks is the ability to replace only the colors that are empty instead of replacing all the colors, some of which may have quite a bit left in the cartridge. This has the added benefit of less waste - and less impact on the earth and your wallet!

When printing several copies of the same document or photo, you will most likely use more of a specific color, which again makes the individual ink system much more cost effective. Most individual ink cartridges hold more ink than the traditional all-in-one cartridges, so they last longer, and in the long run, save you money.

One line of printers that really stands out is Canon’s PIXMA printers. Our very own Scrap Girls CEO Ro loves hers and was gracious enough to answer some questions and share her experience with Canon printers.

How long have you owned your printer?
I have owned Canon printers since 2004. I researched carefully each time I purchased one and always came back to Canon. They are great printers. I have owned this particular printer for 2.5 years.

What features made you decide on this particular printer?
It is critical that each color is separate, rather than in one multi-color pack. That's because you burn through yellow the most. If you get a printer that has all of the colors together, you'll waste a lot of ink and money.

I chose a Canon PIXMA printer because the ink is rated to last about a century. What I didn't know when I got it was that it would be so easy on ink. I stocked up on ink, expecting to go through it, but haven't even begun to use my stash. It lasts a long time.

What photo paper do you generally use, a Canon brand or something else?
I have found that I can use any paper successfully in my printer, which is another great feature. Some printers are picky and only do well with the same brand of paper. With my Canon, I can use whatever paper I get on sale.

Any other helpful notes?
I have found that it can be kind of hard to print 4x6-inch photos on 4x6-inch paper. If I have a lot of photos that size, I send them off to Snapfish or someplace like that. I print a lot of 8x8-inch layouts on my printer, though. I print it on 8.5x11-inch paper and then trim off the excess.

Thanks, Ro, for sharing your experience and insight!

Happy printing!

Tips From The Pros Image

Story Time: From a Young Child's Perspective

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop Elements 9.0 on Windows 7

There's a story to be told in routine, everyday experiences. But how the story is told on a scrapbook page can make that ordinary event come to life. Have you ever considered journaling that experience from a child's perspective, especially a baby or very young child?

When I ran out of words to use on my scrapbook pages such as adorable, precious, lovable, cute, etc., it occurred to me that this little person actually had feelings and emotions, just like me. Why not interpret those thoughts to give more interest and depth to the page by giving the child a voice?

Seek simple words as you record the fleeting moments of his or her childhood. For example, when taking your small child on a nature walk, the dialogue might be as follows. "Mommy bundled me in a baby sling and took me for a walk today. I saw the bright, warm sunlight streaming through the trees. I saw a big fishee in the sparkling, cool water. But most importantly, I felt my mommy's tender love as she held me in her arms." The key is to write from your child's point-of-view, and you will be surprised that it is easy and fun to put yourself in his or her place.

Simple observations, put together, make a story to accompany your precious photos. Another example would be to observe how your child relates to another child. You could write, "It was love at first sight. Shelby is so pretty that she makes me drool. I think she likes me, too. She pulls my socks off when we are together. She sleeps a lot. I guess she needs her beauty rest. Well, it sure does work 'cause she is the most gorgeous girl I have ever seen in my short life." By documenting seemingly uneventful experiences, you will soon discover that you have an endless supply of material.

Today's layout was inspired by a sporting event that I participated in with my two-year-old grandson. While I was floundering about with the football, I formulated in my mind what he might be thinking about his non-athletic grandma in motion. Although very patient with me, he would frantically chase the ball when it would go out-of-bounds calling, "I got it, I got it, I got it!" You can read the rest of the story chronicled in the scrapbook page below... from my grandson's perspective.
