Today's Special of the Day!

Girly Girl Collection Biggie
Girly Girl Collection Biggie

Save 30% off this Collection Biggie today only!

Each week on Tuesdays, we will be spotlighting one designer and one of their favorite products. This product will be on sale for one day only at 30% off!

This week's designer spotlight is on Ang Campbell. In a brief interview with Ang, she shared these comments with us...

"My best friend had just finished redecorating her daughter's room and was excited to show it to me. When I walked in that girly-girl room and saw the colors and patterns in the quilt, the color of the walls, and the accent pieces my friend had chosen, I had an immediate urge to create a collection! Girly Girl Collection Biggie was an absolute delight to design and has proven to be my go-to kit for many, many of the layouts I've created featuring my own daughter."

1. When designing a collection what do you start with first? Papers, embellishments, word art?

I almost always start with the papers. The papers help me get a solid feel for what direction to take the embellishments and really help me to establish my color palette. I also tend to keep an open text file while I'm designing so that if word art phrases or words come to mind, I can jot them down so I don't forget!

2. Are you an early morning designer or do you burn the midnight candle?

I am soooooooo completely a night owl. The early bird may get the worm, but the night owl gets peace and quiet and uninterrupted work time! My kids are all sort of early risers, so getting work done in the morning is virtually impossible at my house.

Forward or Backward?

Faith is forward. Fear is backward. There is no standing still. If you feel stuck, keep moving, have patience, and after a while, you'll receive a promised reward – the thing that is best for you.

Faith accepts a gift as rewarding, even if it is challenging.

Fear rejects every outcome other than the desired one as a signal that disaster and rejection lie ahead.

Have confidence. Be patient. Have faith and keep... moving... forward.

Decorating a Mirror Frame

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Windows Vista

When I received this assignment for making a hybrid craft for the August Scrap Girls Club, I was pretty nervous. I don't consider myself a very crafty person. In the old days, I sewed valences and hair bows; all that was required was a straight line. When my kids were little, we did lots of artsy-crafty things. It was always enjoyable, but I never considered my creations to be all that creative. The craft was something to fill the time and keep the kids engaged, something tactile that would allow them to get messy and be uninhibited. The craft activity was more about the process than the end result.

When I thought about my end result for this assignment, I was pretty intimidated! So why am I telling you this? Because I learned that with Scrap Girls digital scrapbooking supplies, I can take what I know about design, apply it to the craft arena, and create something really special! And if I can do it, you can, too!

Today, I am going to show you how I made a pretty frame for a mirror for my 14-year-old daughter. Every 14-year-old girl needs to wake up and feel loved and pretty when she looks in the mirror so she can start the day feeling good about herself. The August Scrap Girls Club, Joyous Collection Biggie, is the perfect collection for this craft!

For starters, a trip to the local craft store was in order. I found an unfinished mirror for $1 - perfect for making a digital scrapbooking hybrid project. I had craft paint and sealer glue already on hand.

Digital Scrapbook Club Tutorial: Mirror frame and craft supplies needed.

To start the project, a new file was opened in my computer software program to the exact outer dimensions of my frame. I created a new background layer with a pretty paper from Joyous Collection Biggie. Using the Rectangle Tool (one of the Custom Shape Tools) and the layout guides, I drew a box to the exact measurements of the interior portion of the frame, which would represent the mirror. This shape was drawn on its own layer so it could be turned on and off.

Next, I pressed Ctrl+Click on the thumbnail of the rectangle shape so that the "dancing ants" (or maybe you call them "marching ants" – I always think they look like they’re dancing!) were showing around the rectangle that was just drawn. Then, highlighting my background layer, I simply hit Delete. Now, the background layer is a frame, and the "canvas" that I'll be working on for this project is ready!

Digital Scrapbook Club Tutorial: Select background paper from frame shape.

Digital Scrapbook Club Tutorial: Delete background paper from frame opening.

Now, I can decorate this "frame" as though it is a regular digital scrapbooking layout. I can add embellishments, papers, word art, and text just as though I'm going to print it and put it in an album. Here is my final layout that will be applied to the mirror frame.

Digital Scrapbook Club Tutorial: Decorate frame with digital elements.

Now that the layout is finished, I have a better idea as to what colors will look good on the edges of the wooden frame. For this project, I am selecting orange and pink paints. These colors were chosen due to the bright, happy feel of the layout, and I would like to pull out the orange from the word art a little bit more and emphasize the pink from the flowers. Carefully, I have painted the edges of the wooden frame in pink and the top face of the frame in orange. There are three coats of paint in each color, and I have set it aside to dry.

Now it's time to print a high-quality print of my layout using good photo paper. After the print comes out, I set it aside for a while so that it gets good and dry. Carefully, the edges of the print are trimmed, and the interior portion that represents where the mirror will be was carefully cut away with an X-acto® knife. In addition, a second copy of the flower on the left was printed so that it could be layered to give additional dimension to the project. It also served to hide potential errors due to the delicate nature of the stamens on the flower.

The trimmed layout was placed carefully on top of the painted frame and glued down. The entire top of the frame was generously coated with two coats of Mod Podge®. This seals the layout onto the frame, as well as preserves the color of the print. After the second coat had a few minutes to dry, a third coat was applied and textured with a paint brush.

Lastly, the cut pieces of the flower were painted with Mod Podge® and set aside to dry. This will give more stiffness to the dimensional part of the flower. The flower pieces, when dry, were placed on the frame using dimensional foam squares.

The end result is a bright, happy, feminine, encouraging affirmation mirror. Not only was it fun, but I surprised myself with how easy it was. The digital scrapbooking supplies make it look more clean and neat than I ever thought myself capable of crafting! There is no reason to be intimidated by digital scrapbooking hybrid crafts! If I can do it, then so can you!
